In the 2021 KCSE results released on Sartuday 23rd April 2022, by the Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha, 831,026 candidates sat for the exams compared to 743,299 candidates who sat for 2020 KCSE.
Out of this, 50.9 percent were male, and 49.1 percent were female. A total of 18 counties had more female candidates than male candidates. All Central counties had more female candidates than male
The top candidate was Jeriel Ndeda Obura from Mangu High School, with a mean grade A of 87 points.
In the overall grade summary for 2021 KCSE results, 1,138 candidates scored grade A plain, while 5,973 candidates scored grade A- (minus).
Meanwhile, 13,463 candidates scooped grade B+ (plus), and 25,035 candidates got a B plain. At grade B- (minus), 39,683 candidates managed it.

A total of 59,843 candidates scored a grade C+ (plus), which is the minimum entry to the university
A large number of candidates representing over 50 percent of students who sat for the 2021 KCSE have scored below grade C+ (plus) and thus have not gotten a University entry.
A sum of 81,345 candidates scored grade C (plain) in the exams, while 99,406 candidates scored C- (Minus)
A total of 116,355 candidates scored grade D+ (plus), while 145,916 candidates scored grade D plain. At grade D- (Minus), KNEC recorded a whopping 187,264 candidates.
The number of candidates who scored grade E in the 2021 KCSE has almost doubled to 46,151 from about 20,000 in 2020.
A total of 441 candidates saw their exam results canceled over exam irregularities.
