The previous round in Canada saw Red Bull’s Max Verstappen claim a sixth race win of the season and further strengthen his grip on the top spot in the Drivers’ Championship. The Dutchman now enjoys a 46-point lead over teammate Sergio Perez, while Red Bull has racked up six straight wins (five to Verstappen, one to Perez).

“I think, overall, they [Ferrari] were very quick in the race so it would have been really tough for me to close that gap at the end,” said Verstappen, who held off a strong challenge from Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz Jnr to claim victory.

“It was really exciting at the end. I was giving it everything I had. Of course, Carlos was doing the same. Following is tricky around here but I could see he was pushing, charging, pushing. But, of course, when you’re under DRS, it’s a bit easier to charge.”

Three points behind Perez in the standings is Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, who started at the back of the grid in Canada (after opting for several new power unit parts and taking a penalty as a result) but produced a fine drive to come home in fifth place.

“Then the end was quite fun. I had to be a bit more aggressive to at least get some points and we finished fifth at the end which is the best considering everything that happened [at the Canadian GP],” said Leclerc, who was not willing to speculate whether the Red Bulls now have a definitive pace advantage over Ferrari.

“I have no idea because I haven’t seen Red Bull at all during the race, they were just too far in front but overall it felt like the feeling was good and whenever the feeling is good, that is a good sign whether it was enough or not to beat Red Bull, I don’t know. I think it’s been close during the whole season.”

Meanwhile, Mercedes seem to have found some much-needed form, with Lewis Hamilton picking up a third-place finish in Canada – just his second podium appearance this season. The seven-time world champion is hopeful that the Silver Arrows can build on what they produced in Montreal, especially heading into his home race at Silverstone.

“We’ve been working so hard and then to have a strong race [in Canada] just gives me so much hope and confidence that we can move forward,” said Hamilton. “There is potential in this car, it’s not currently where we want it to be but it’s just got a really small working window. If you don’t get it perfect, it’s all over the place. That’s the really hard thing to navigate through.”
