SuperSport viewers on DStv and GOtv can look forward to seeing all the action from the XXII Commonwealth Games, held in Birmingham, England from Thursday 28 July to Monday 8 August 2022.

SuperSport is the ultimate destination for sports fans, with an unparalleled selection of action from around the world.

Often referred to as ‘The Friendly Games, the Commonwealth Games is an international multi-sport event involving athletes from the Commonwealth of Nations. The event was first held in 1930, and, with the exception of 1942 and 1946, has taken place every four years since then.

The Commonwealth Games were known as the British Empire Games from 1930 to 1950, the British Empire and Commonwealth Games from 1954 to 1966, and British Commonwealth Games from 1970 to 1974.

This year sees England hosting the Commonwealth Games for the third time after London 1934 and Manchester 2002. The XXII Commonwealth Games will feature a range of sports, from athletics to swimming, boxing to cycling, and gymnastics to weight lifting, as well as so much more.

The new sports appearing in the Commonwealth Games in 2022 include 3×3 basketball (including wheelchair 3×3) and women’s cricket (with men’s T20 cricket having already appeared in the previous edition).

African nations are expected to feature strongly across many disciplines, with South Africa set to be strong in athletics, swimming, and sevens rugby, while the likes of Kenya, Uganda, and Ethiopia will be ripping up the track and road for middle and long-distance running events.

Kenya’s Emmanuel Korir, for example, will be a leading star at the Games, having claimed Men’s 800m Gold at the Summer Olympics in Tokyo last year. He will compete in the Men’s 400m in Birmingham and is looking forward to potentially adding a Commonwealth medal to his tally of international accolades.

“It will be an honor to represent my country at another major sporting event like the Commonwealth Games,” said Korir. “This will be one of the highlights of the season, alongside the IAAF World Championships in the United States.”

Another African athlete looking to make history is South Africa’s Chad Le Clos, who needs just one more medal to match Australian Phillip Adams and Englishman Michael Gault as the most decorated Commonwealth Games athlete of all time. The 30-year-old swimmer has seven gold, three silver, and seven bronze medals and one behind shooters Adams and Gault’s 18 medals.

“To us, Birmingham Commonwealth Games presents an opportunity for those athletes with Olympic ambitions to stake their claim for Paris 2024 and LA 2028,” said SASCOC chief executive Nozipho Jafta.

“In 2010 in Delhi, Chad Le Clos won gold at the Commonwealth Games and two years later won gold at the 2012 London Olympics.

“In 2018 Tatjana Schoenmaker also announced her arrival on the big stage with gold at the Gold Coast’s Commonwealth Games and then she went on to win gold and world record at the Tokyo Olympics. My heart bursts with pride when I look at the composition of Team SA that is going to Birmingham.”
