Meanwhile, a 2Kg packet of Pembe Maize flour is trading cheapest at Cleanshelf ta 200 shillings compared to Naivas and Carrefour, where it’s selling at 209 and 204 shillings, respectively.

For a 2kg packet of Ajab Wheat flour, you will need 212 shillings at Naivas, 200 shillings at Carrefour, and 204 shillings at Cleanshelf supermarket.

The cost of 800g of Menengai Soap cream is cheapest at Cleanshelf supermarket at 207 shillings while highest at Naivas supermarket where the product goes for 216 shillings.

The same Jamaa Cream bar soap quantity is 230 shillings at Naivas, 214 shillings at Carrefour, and 200 shillings at Cleanshelf.

Aerial Detergent Powder is retailing highest at Naivas Supermarket at 399 shillings for 1kg and 745 shillings for 2Kg. One kilogram of the same product retails at 395 shillings and 399 shillings per kilogram at Carrefour and Cleanshelf, respectively.

Concurrently, the cost of a 500Ml packet of Fresha Milk is 60 shillings at Cleanshelf, while 58 shillings and 57 shillings at Naivas and Carrefour, respectively.

Tissue paper prices have risen sharply in the wake of the runaway surge in prices of essential commodities to retail at an average of 160 shillings for a pack of four at Naivas.

The cost of other essential commodities such as bread, sugar, and salt has also doubled in the year, with 400g of bread now at 58 shillings, 2kg sugar at 235 shillings, and 1Kg salt at 33 shillings up from an average of 20 shillings a year ago.

The price of super petrol, diesel, and kerosene have increased by 22.7, 26.6, and 23.6 per cent to 159.2 shillings per litre, 140.0 shillings per litre, and 127.9 shillings from 129.7 shillings per litre, 110.6 per litre and 103.5 per litre, year to date.

Many people have shared their shopping lists, complaining that the sharp spike in prices of essential food items curtails their purchasing power.

Inflation for June 2022 came in at 7.9 per cent, the highest since August 2017 and an increase from the 7.1 per cent recorded in May. This was attributable to a 1.2, 1.5, and 0.9 per cent increase in the food and non-alcoholic beverages index, household and equipment, and transport index.

Unfortunately, Kenyans will not only be struggling at the house level but also in their businesses, especially hotel industries that depend primarily on cooking gas, whose prices have also increased rapidly.

Market experts project that the upward trend in commodity prices will continue given the continuous rise in fuel prices.

As July comes knocking, Kenyans are eagerly waiting for what might be the month that will go down in history as one where the cost of living became the highest.
