Viewers on DStv can look forward to the 11th round of the 2022 Formula 1 World Championship, the Austrian Grand Prix, live from the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg on the afternoon of Sunday 10 July 2022.

The previous round in Great Britain saw Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz Jnr claim his first-ever race win, with the Spaniard capitalizing on slip-ups from Red Bull and holding off his teammate Charles Leclerc to secure victory.

“Lewis was on it today, one of his days but we managed to hold on,” said Sainz, claiming his first win in his 150th start.

Sainz benefitted from having fresh tires for the final portion of the race after a safety car, with Leclerc, left to fend for himself on older rubber.

“I suppose because we believed that…I’m pretty sure we didn’t have enough space between the two cars to stop both of them. So we had to make a choice between the first or second car,” said Ferrari boss Mattia Binotto.

“So we decided to stop Carlos simply because Charles had the track position and he was still leading and remained leader of the race at the time.

“So you don’t know what the others would have done if he would have stopped as the leader. So for us it was clear – not stopping Charles, keeping track of position, and stopping Carlos, he was the only one we could have stopped, and then we were hoping for more tire degradation on the softs. That didn’t happen.”

The title picture, however, remains firmly in favor of Red Bull: Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez are one-twos in the Drivers’ Championship standings, with Leclerc and Sainz in third and fourth respectively, while Red Bull enjoys a 63-point lead at the top of the Constructors’ Championship.

In addition, the next event is at their home circuit, the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg, and the straight-line speed advantage that Verstappen and Perez have enjoyed throughout the season should be even more pronounced in the hills of Austria – making them the clear favorites for victory.

Verstappen only managed seventh at this past weekend’s British GP after suffering from a damaged car.

“Normally, [debris] would just explode or just get pushed away, but this time it went into my floor and it completely destroyed the whole left-hand side of my floor,” explained the Dutchman.

“Within two corners, I felt like the car was falling apart and I thought I had a puncture, which wasn’t the case but even after that the car was really a handful to drive. But I think overall to finish seventh with that car was still a good result. It’s better than zero points, that’s for sure.”
