Here Is What To Expect From UEFA Women’s Euro

This will be the 13th edition of the Women’s Euro tournament and a second since the expansion to 16 teams. England is the host, the Netherlands the defending champions, and Northern Ireland will be making their finals debut.

The tournament gets underway on the evening of Wednesday 6 July at Old Trafford in Manchester, with England facing Austria in a Group A clash. The Three Lionesses are hoping to get off to a flying start in search of their first major tournament triumph, with new coach Sarina Wiegman taking the new team to new heights, according to key player Bethany England.

“I really like Sarina,” said England. “I think what she brings to the team, she’s very direct. There are no grey areas with her, I’ve learned that she’s very full forthcoming. But you can tell she cares, everyone wants to win but she’s also got that little switch of brittleness that you need. She and her staff that she’s brought in has been a very good chance for England.”

Another team to watch is Germany, who will open their Group B campaign against Denmark in London on Friday 8 July. German coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg has said that the Women’s Euros must be recognized as a major part of the football calendar.

“When I’m on the road myself, an incredible number of people I don’t even know come up to me and call out: ‘Hey, now it’s the European Championships, we’ll keep our fingers crossed!’ At the same time, I recently read the headline in a newspaper: ‘There’s no big soccer tournament this [European] summer’. That annoys me,” said the German coach.

Defending champions of the Netherlands will open their campaign in Group C against Sweden on Saturday 9 July, with coach Mark Parsons admitting that a recent heavy defeat at the hands of the English means his team cannot be considered front-runners anymore.

“England will be favorites in the Euros,” Parsons told reporters. “The quality of players, the home crowd, the resources the WSL [Women’s Super League] has been putting in, the work the clubs have been doing — it all comes together and it’s very hard to see they’re not favourites.”

The top two teams in each group will advance into the quarterfinals, with a straight knockout competition running from 20 to 31 July, when the final is held at the iconic Wembley Stadium in London.
