Sylvia Mulinge Exits Safaricom for a CEO Position at MTN Uganda

Safaricom Chief Consumer officer Sylvia Mulinge will be leaving the company to take up a new role of the Chief Executive officer at MTN Uganda on 1st October 2022.

Mulinge will replace Wim Vanhelleputte at the firm and assume the role of managing the overall brand and leading the transformation of the brand to become a digital lifestyle enabler of consumers’ lives.

Sylvia has held various senior roles since joining Safaricom in 2006, including General Manager Enterprise Business Unit, Director Consumer Business Unit, and Chief Customer Officer.

She took up the role of Chief Consumer officer at Safaricom in July 2021 and has been instrumental in steering the agile transformation of the commercial units.

In a statement, Safaricom CEO Peter Ndegwa described her as a champion of Digital Transformation, a purpose-led and impact-driven business leader, adding that she has lived the Safaricom Purpose of transforming customers’ lives using technology as an enabler of positive change.

More recently, she led Safaricom in setting up two key businesses in Safaricom; Enterprise and Fixed Data.

She has been an Executive Committee member (EXCO) for the last 9 years, where she has offered leadership and been part of many of the company’s successes.

The new role marks her successful jump to the CEO’s post after her appointment to lead Vodacom Tanzania in 2018 was thwarted by Tanzanian authorities, who refused to issue her a work permit.

She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Food Science and Technology from the University of Nairobi.
