IEBC through its chair Wafula Chebukati, announced Monday, August 29 as the new date for the postponed elections.
This is a date arrived at by Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC through an internal meeting held on Monday 22nd August 2022.
The elections which were to be held during the general election on August 9 were pushed forward to August 23 after the commission realized a mistake in the ballot papers printed.
The dates were earlier on set for 23rd August 2022, before the commission indefinitely postponed them again last week, citing harassment and intimidation of its staff.
Here is the official list of the elections to be held on Monday 29th August 2022 according to the IEBC.
Mombasa County
Kakamega County
Kitui Rural Constituency (Kitui County)
Pokot South Constituency (West Pokot County)
Rongai Constituency (Nakuru County)
Nyaki West (North lmenti Constituency – Meru County)
Kwa Njenga (Embakasi South Constituency – Nairobi County)
Some of the candidates who were at the event lamented to Chebukati that the set date was too close limiting their campaign period and suggested that the elections should be postponed to September.
However, Chebukati insisted that the elections must be completed as soon as possible to allow the commission to publish party lists, which he claimed could not be completed without the elections.
While responding to questions from the candidates, IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati said the candidates are free to campaign until 48 hours before the election.
Candidates also called for the reshuffling of the Presiding Officers over fears that they will be biased.
