Schools to Officially Resume Learning on Monday 15th August

Education CS Prof George Magoha has announced that all schools will officially resume learning activities on Monday 15^th August 2022.

In a press statement on Wednesday 10^th August, Prof. George Magoha said that the changes have been occasioned by an expected delay in the vote tallying process.

“On 1st August 2022, I ordered the early closure of all Basic Education Institutions to allow for adequate preparation and conduct of the General Elections. We indicated that reopening would be on the 11th of August 2022,” Magoha’s statement read in part.

“We have however been informed that the process of tallying ballots may still be ongoing on the aforementioned date. Therefore, following further consultations, I hereby convey the Government’s decision that Basic Education Institutions will re-open from Monday, 15th August 2022,” it further read.

Magoha said that the latest communication supersedes any earlier communication that the ministry had made on the re-opening of basic education institutions.

“We apologize for any inconvenience occasioned by these changes and ask for your indulgence, as we work through ensuring the safety and comfort of learners through this period,” he added.

In a statement released on Monday, August 1, Magoha stated that all learners in public institutions were to remain home for 10 days, as part of their mid-term recess.

However, the CS noted that the dates were tentative and were subject to change in the event of a repeat election. He also admitted that the national exams calendar could be affected.

The 2022 academic year has four national exams; the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE), Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE), and the Grade Three and Six exams under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).

KCPE has been slated for between November 28 and December 1, while KCSE will take place between December 1 and 23.

The Grade Six exam will be sat between November 28-30, with 1.27 million candidates registered to sit the pioneer exam under the new curriculum which will see them join junior secondary schools.

The CBC Grade 6 exam will constitute 40 percent of the total score while the Grade 4, 5, and 6 school-based assessments will make up the remaining 60 percent.

The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) announced it would open a portal from August 15 to August 30 where Grade 6 learners would then select their preferred junior high.
