There have been calls for TSC to increase the number of teachers it deploys every year as well as make public the number it deploys in each county after complaints from a section of teachers that their counties are sidelined.

The Teacher Service Commission, TSC, has kicked off the process of deploying 1000 primary school teachers to secondary schools across the country.

TSC advertised 1000 employment posts in 2019 and another 1000 in September last year and has finished issuing deployment letters for successful applicants.

Knut Secretary General, Collins Oyuu noted the deployment process has been ongoing.

‘‘The process of deployment started long ago. It has been an ongoing process in readiness for the next year’s Junior Secondary transition,’’ Oyuu said.

The promoted PTE graduate teachers start at job Grade C2 at a salary of 34,955 shillings per month and will move to job grade C2 upon completion of three years according to Career Progression Guidelines (CPG) for teachers.

“Successful candidates under this category will be appointed at T-scale 7, grade C2 as per the career Progression Guidelines for teachers and shall be deployed to secondary schools where vacancies will be available,” said TSC.

At least 6,347 primary school teachers have a degree with C+ at KCSE and C+ in the two teaching subjects as of July 2020 and hence qualify to teach in current secondary schools.

The commission has raised a threshold for those instructors who wish to work in Junior Secondary schools. Here are the requirements.

Be a Kenyan Citizen
Be a holder of a P1 certificate
Be a holder of a bachelor’s degree in education with two teaching subjects
Must have attained at least C plus mean grade at KCSE
Must be serving under TSC

There is also a section of primary school teachers, who joined universities to study degree secondary options, but only had a C (plain) mean grade in their KCSE exams.

Those in hardship areas earn an additional hardship allowance of Sh10,900.

This category of teachers will move to job grade C3 upon completion of three years as stipulated in Career Progression Guidelines for teachers (CPG).
