The pick of Premier League matches this weekend is the meeting of Arsenal and Liverpool at the Emirates Stadium early on Sunday evening. The Gunners have enjoyed a great start to the season, but the visit of the Reds will be a true test of how far they have progressed under manager Mikel Arteta.
The Spanish tactician has praised his predominantly youthful side for playing above expectations: “It’s really rare what they’re doing at a big, big club,” Arteta said. “Really rare. If not, just give me examples of things that are happening [elsewhere].”
He added, “For me, it’s about being consistent,” he said. “When you try to bring an idea, you share that vision with the football club. Then you take that direction and you go for it.”
Elsewhere, Manchester City will back themselves to get the better of Southampton at home on Saturday afternoon, at a kick-off time which also features Newcastle United at home to Brentford, Leicester City visiting Bournemouth and Chelsea hosting Wolverhampton Wanderers – with manager Graham Potter set to make his home Premier League debut with the club.
“It’s not been easy with a change of coach and everything that comes with that but [the players’] response has been brilliant,” said Potter. “From an effort perspective, it was 100 percent there. It’s not the position we want to be in but we have to respond, it’s as simple as that. It’s a tough group but there’s enough quality in the squad and we have to respond.”
Sunday, aside from the Arsenal v Liverpool match, also features a London derby between West Ham United and Fulham, as well as Manchester United visiting Everton, while Monday evening will see Aston Villa traveling to Nottingham Forest desperate for points.
“We will get better as the new players settle at the club,” said Forest midfielder Remo Freuler. “It takes time for these things to come together, but we need to be patient and work hard for the manager and the fans.”
SuperSport is the only place where you can get English commentary on the legendary La Liga, where the headline fixture sees champions Real Madrid travel to Estadio Coliseum Alfonso Pérez to face Getafe in a Madrid derby on Saturday night.
Los Blancos have enjoyed a strong start to the season, but the Azulones are always fired up for a clash against the heavyweights and will aim to put a dent in their title defense.
“We know what Real Madrid does. We are not here to flatter the rival, but to encourage ourselves,” said Getafe manager Quique Sanchez Flores. “We know that when you have to play between two very important Champions League matches, obviously there are things to think about and balance.
“That is going through [Real manager Carlo] Ancelotti’s head, that is his game, the one that will play in his mind. We have a mind for ourselves. Our context is different. What they think will be fine, but we care about managing our players.”
Saturday also features Atletico Madrid at home to Girona and Athletic Bilbao visiting Sevilla, while the round opens on Friday with Valencia visiting Osasuna and looking to continue their progress under fiery manager Gennaro Gattuso.
“We have not found consistency, but I am happy with the effort of the players,” said the Italian tactician. “It will take time for the full potential of the team to emerge. When it does, we will be very tough to beat.”
Sunday is headlined by the late kick-off at Camp Nou which sees Barcelona host Celta Vigo, but the prior clash between Real Sociedad and Villarreal is equally intriguing – with Los Verdiblancos having enjoyed one of the best starts to a campaign in the club’s history.
“So far we are good, but that does not mean that we are going to continue well if we are not the same team with a spirit of important work and good performance,” said manager Manuel Pellegrini.
The top clash from Serie A in this round is the meeting of AC Milan and Juventus at the iconic San Siro Stadium in the early evening of Saturday. The Rossoneri are looking to boost their title defense hopes with a win over a traditional rival.
The Bianconeri have looked a shadow of their former selves this season, but Milan manager Stefano Pioli has warned against underestimating them: “We cannot let the past results influence our approach to this match. Juventus remain a team with great talent and they have an excellent manager. We will approach them as a very dangerous opponent.”
Earlier on Saturday, Internazionale have a potential banana skin at the MAPEI Stadium against Sassuolo, though defender Francesco Acerbi is confident they will put things right: “I’ve encountered a fantastic group, right now we’re going through some difficulties but between the fans, the players, the staff, and the directors, everything will get resolved. We hope to get back on track.”
A busy Sunday is headlined by an intriguing clash between Udinese and Atalanta. The former has shown a return to being ‘giant killers’ – having notably taken down Roma and Inter so far this season – while the latter has enjoyed an excellent start to the season and looks to be back to their best under manager Gian Piero Gasperini.
Atalanta has also shown notable flexibility in their tactical approach – something new under ‘Gasp’: “We have many faces and can choose between versions,” he explained.
“Even in the second half of last season, we weren’t as prolific as we were, and throwing too many players forward to seek spaces was just not practical. At this moment, this is fine, but we’ll see how the season goes on. These are very balanced games and the details can make the difference.”
Sunday also features Roma at home to Lecce, Napoli visiting Cremonese and the round closes out on Monday night with Fiorentina looking to put a dent in Lazio’s hopes of moving up the table.
