KEY POINTS

For the first time, Twitter and LinkedIn are missing from the top 10 most popular and downloaded apps in Kenya. TikTok Lite is top.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

TikTok Lite, WhatsApp Messenger, Mkopo Haraka and TikTok are among the most popular apps in Kenya.

Twitter and LinkedIn are not among the top 10 most popular apps in Kenya. For LinkedIn, one might understand, but for Twitter, it is both strange and a shift of dynamics.

Literally, Twitter has been among the most popular in the country given the “online” noise of the “self-appointed” Kenyans on Twitter, aka, #KoT who have an opinion on anything even if they have none.

In the latest ranking, however, Twitter is nowhere to be seen among the top 10 most popular apps. Is Twitter noisier but not popular? Here are the 10 apps that Kenyans seem to love:

  • TikTok Lite
  • WhatsApp Messenger
  •  Mkopo Haraka
  • TikTok
  • Netflix
  • Snapchat
  • Xender
  • Facebook Lite
  • Spotify
  • CapCut

Another interesting thing to notice is that gaming apps (for betting) are missing from the list contrary to what it used to be. Instagram, that used to feature prominently is missing too.

“This provides a new challenge to marketers. It means the tools they consider as popular, aren’t as popular as they think, hence the need to change,” said Steve Biko Wafula, the CEO of Hidalgo Group of Companies.

Analysts, however, say that Twitter might be back with vigour following the numerous changes that Elon Musk, the new owner of the giant platform is putting in place.

Elon has currently introduced views for every tweet posted, a move that is likely to shift how people view and perceive tweets beyond retweets, likes and replies.

“A tweet is seen 100 times more than it is engaged on. For years, this value has often been lost but not anymore. Our aim is to make Twitter great,” said Elon Musk when he was introducing the Views on tweets.

Facebook, on the other hand, has for years been the favourite of marketers given its high conversion levels as compared to other social media tools.
