TSC To Assign One Teacher Per Class For Grade Seven

The Teachers Service Commission, TSC, has allocated one teacher per class to teach junior secondary school. According to TSC, Primary schools will receive teachers, according to the number of classes they have for Grade 7.

The junior secondary is set to start in January 2023, with the first class being grade 7. Candidates who just did the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment in grade 6 will be joining grade 7 in junior secondary school.

Speaking to members of parliament, TSC legal officer Cavin Anyuor noted that there are 30,550 Grade 7 classes in the country and TSC has allocated one teacher for every class beginning January 2023.

“We have assigned 1,000 teachers if the county has 1,000 courses,” he stated.

Anyuor added that the Treasury’s budget allocation determines the number of teachers. TSC chair Jamleck Muturi declared that the TSC will retool teachers in primary schools to be compliant with the new competency-based curriculum.

Muturi said this seeks to ensure all schools have a sufficient number of teachers. TSC will redistribute teachers who are in primary school who have qualified to teach in junior secondary,” he said.

Teachers’ Strike

Through the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT), teachers issued demands to President William Ruto’s government lest they organize an industrial strike.

According to Collins Oyuu, the secretary general of the KNUT, PS made the announcement on Tuesday, December 13 during the annual union delegation meeting in Kisumu.

Oyuu urged a revision of the Collective Bargaining Agreement for the years 2021-2025 as well as a 60 percent raise in the basic pay for teachers in all cadres (CBA).

KNUT secretary general Collins Oyuu demanded a 60 percent increase in the basic salary for teachers across all cadres and a review of the 2021-2025 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA). The last CBA signed for 2017 -2021 put a lot of emphasis on the welfare of headteachers and their deputies.

“We now demand the welfare of all teachers be put into consideration in the 2021-2025 CBA and every teacher to be awarded a 60 percent basic salary increase,” Oyuu demanded. He argued that teachers should be treated well, considering their job demands.
