KEY POINTS

"Indecision, doubt, and fear. The members of this unholy trio are closely related; where one is found, the other two are close at hand."

KEY TAKEAWAYS

"Each indecision brings its own delays and days are lost lamenting over lost days. What you can do or think you can do, begin it. For boldness has genius, power, and genius in it."

Indecision is the state of being unable to make up one’s mind or choose a course of action. It is often caused by fear, doubt, confusion, or lack of information.

Indecision can have serious consequences for one’s life and opportunities, as it can lead to missed chances, wasted time, regret, frustration, and unhappiness.

One of the most famous quotes about indecision is attributed to Marcus Tullius Cicero, a Roman philosopher, and statesman: “More is lost by indecision than wrong decision. Indecision is the thief of opportunity. It will steal you blind.” This quote implies that indecision is worse than making a mistake because at least a mistake can be corrected or learned from, while indecision prevents any action or progress.

Indecision also robs one of the potential benefits and rewards that come with seizing an opportunity, such as personal growth, satisfaction, achievement, or happiness.

Another quote that illustrates the negative effects of indecision is from Napoleon Hill, an American author and motivational speaker: “Indecision, doubt, and fear. The members of this unholy trio are closely related; where one is found, the other two are close at hand.” This quote suggests that indecision is not only a problem in itself, but also a symptom and a cause of other psychological issues, such as lack of confidence, anxiety, and insecurity. Indecision can paralyze one’s will and prevent one from taking risks, pursuing goals, or expressing oneself.

A third quote that warns against the dangers of indecision is from Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, a German writer, and statesman: “Each indecision brings its own delays and days are lost lamenting over lost days. What you can do or think you can do, begin it. For boldness has genius, power, and genius in it.” This quote emphasizes the importance of taking action and being decisive in life, as it can save time, energy, and resources that would otherwise be wasted on hesitation and regret. It also encourages one to have faith in one’s abilities and potential, as well as to embrace the challenges and opportunities that life offers.

In essence,  indecision is a harmful habit that can ruin one’s life and opportunities. It can cause one to miss out on valuable chances, waste precious time, feel regretful and unhappy, and suffer from fear and doubt. Therefore, it is better to make a decision than to remain indecisive, even if the decision turns out to be wrong. As Marie Beynon Lyons Ray, an American journalist, and author, said: “Indecision is fatal. It is better to make a wrong decision than build up a habit of indecision. If you’re wallowing in indecision, you certainly can’t act – and action is the basis of success.”
