Kenya Airways (KQ) has officially resumed daily flights to New York as it moves to cash in on growing demand for air travel on the route as well as rising demand for air travel.

Kenya Airways had reduced the flight frequency on the route to five times per week from three last year in December, citing high passenger bookings.

Kenya Airways had also increased frequencies on routes such as Paris to daily flights from five times a week, Madagascar to nine times per week from seven, Comoros to five times weekly from four, Amsterdam to five times every week from four, Johannesburg to 24 times from four weekly and London to 14 times from 12 times.

According to Kenya Airways, the decision to ramp up the frequencies has been informed by high forward booking from passengers seeking summer tickets.

“We have increased our frequencies to daily on the New York route because of high demand from passengers as we approach the summer season,” said the airline.

The move comes as a boost to the national carrier, which is fighting to fly out of the loss-making territory. The daily flights to the US come at a time when Ethiopian Airlines-Africa’s largest carrier has expanded its flights to the US by adding another route to Atlanta, and reintroduction of the New York route via Abidjan, heightening competition on the route.

This New York route allows the airline to benefit from connecting travelers who transit through Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) from other African capitals that lack direct air access to the US.

KQ has grappled with fluctuating demand on the US route since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic. With this service, the airline is able to gain from connecting passengers traveling through JKIA from other African cities that don’t have direct access to the largest economy in the world.
