BY Getrude Mathayo · July 7, 2023 03:07 pm

Egerton University scrapped eight courses in February 2023 in a bid to enhance financial stability. Egerton University Vice Chancellor Prof Isaac Kibwage said the eight courses had not been attracting students at the institution in the last five years.

Prof Kibwage stated that the university will declare some departments redundant to cut costs once a criterion to exit them is established. Prof Kibwage said the move will play a key role in enhancing the financial stability of the institution while countering risks, such as frequent strikes

He added that owing to the government support, all students entering university, and public universities have faced the challenge as their revenues cannot match the costs of programs.

“As part of reorganizing the institution we are scrapping some eight-degree courses that have failed to attract enough students to sustain them despite having hired lecturers for them,” said Prof Kibwage.

“We have so far identified eight-degree programs that we intend to scrap. Lecturers in those departments will have to exit and those qualified for other departments retained,” he said.

Egerton University, established in 1939, is one of Kenya’s oldest institutions of higher learning. The university has been struggling financially, which has affected its operations in recent years.

The move to discontinue the eight-degree courses is part of the institution’s efforts to remain financially stable and sustainable in the long run

The institution has been facing a lot of threats of industrial action from the lecturers following a standoff over salaries and benefits that have not been paid.
