Pharmacy And Poisons Board Warns Women Against Using Detox Pearls

The Pharmacy and Poisons Board (PPB) has warned Kenyan women and the public against using vaginal detox pearls, due to its health risks. The sale of pearls, popularly known as ‘Yoni’ has grown popular among social media users in Kenya.

In a statement released on Monday, August 7, the board said that the vaginal pearls, which are also referred to as herbal tampons or cleansing pearls, are not authorized for use in the country.

“The PPB notifies the public that “Yoni Pearls” is neither registered nor authorized for use in Kenya as required under the Pharmacy and Poisons Act (Cap 244). Therefore, their usage poses potential public health risks as the PPB cannot guarantee their quality, safety or efficacy,” the statement read in part.

PPB warned against the distribution, supply, sale, or use of Yoni Pearls, and any other unregistered products with similar claims. The Yoni pearls are clothed-wrapped ‘pearls’ that contain multiple herbs. They are inserted in the vagina to cleanse or detox the vagina and uterus.

Members of the public and healthcare providers are urged to report any suspicious health products and technologies in the market to the board.

As most of the product adverts and sales are majorly done by celebrities with the motive of attracting more buyers owing to the massive number of followers they have online.

According to the notice, women have been using Yoni Pearls to contain recurrent vaginal infections. Other women seeking answers to reproductive health complications such as ovarian cysts and infertility have also sought refuge in the vaginal pearls.

As per the current market price, three pieces of the product are being sold at Ksh.650 in online stores.
