The Lonely Path Of Retirement Where Money Is The Only Friend

I visit some Member’s Only Clubs within and without Nairobi, and within the faint smiles, fancy suites, and murmurs here and there, lies the tale of retirement. I realized that most old men and women in these clubs are here to enjoy their retirement, relax, and make friends.

Mostly, they have no family around. The majority of them have kids abroad in the United Kingdom, the United States of America, and other places. Mostly, kids carry their mums with them, leaving their dads in Kenya. And so they live, sailing through retirement.

I approached one of the old men. He was in his early 80s. He was a civil servant who worked for 40 years. His four kids are all in Canada. They went with their mum. “In retirement, money is your only true friend. If you have money by your side, your retirement will be the best holiday you will ever have.”

Retirement is as inevitable as death. The Mzee went on. Whether you like it or not, it is coming. Sometimes it comes sooner than you expected. When you retire, calls dwindle, and your circle of friends withers. It is only you, your God, and your money.

I left the club with tears lingering in my eyes. The old man had spoken the truth that is rarely spoken. Pure wisdom. Looked at my miserable life. What will happen if will no longer work tomorrow? What will my two sons survive on? Will my wife even stay with me for a month?

Then I resolved. There is a need to save for your retirement. There is a need to prepare for tomorrow. Looked at the National Social Security Fund (NSSF), went through their socials, and saw their persistent songs on why we should save for retirement.

Saw they have a product called Haba Haba. This is a real product for Mama Mboga, Boda Boda, Jua Kali, and anyone who would love to save. The product allows one to save as little as 25 shillings per day for the future. Registration takes less than a minute through *303*1#.
