Three Companies Fined Ksh 9.3 Million For Data Privacy Abuse

Three companies have been fined at least 9.3 million shillings for failing to observe the provisions of the Data Protection Act, making it one of the largest penalties since the Act became effective. The companies have been given three days to act.

Mulla Pride Limited, a digital lender, will have to pay 2.97 million shillings for sending threatening messages to customers who failed to pay back their loans on time. This has been the norm of most mobile lenders in Kenya who harass their customers.

Casa Vera Lounge will have to pay at least 1.85 million shillings for using a customer’s photo on their social media without consulting the customer. Casa Vera Lounge is located along Ngong Road. It is a bar and restaurant.

Roma School in Uthiru has been fined 4.5 million shillings for posting a photo of kids online without seeking the permission of parents.
