It Is Time To Let Baba Go

Baba, Raila Amolo Odinga, the enigma in Kenyan politics has offered to go for the Chairmanship of the African Union, an announcement that came as a surprise to millions of his diehard supporters as well as those who genuinely hate him politically.

“I am inclined to accept the challenge and I am ready and I offer myself to be of service. I have asked my friend (Former Nigerian president Olusegun Obasanjo) to continue to be a good ambassador and talk to other people,” said Raila.

There are mixed reactions and sentiments. Some feel that Baba shouldn’t have made the announcement. Some feel Baba should and must remain in Kenya. Some also feel that without Baba, politics will never be the same within and without Kenya.

The announcement of Baba complicates things. Some had planned to capitalize on his fame to win elections in the coming years. Some were banking on him to vie for the Presidency once again. And some had planned to vie on the Raila phobia, to win elections in the regions where “Raila is hated.”

But I think it is time to let Baba Raila Odinga go and serve the continent. The Son of Jaramogi has done well locally. He has fought enough for us, although we do not appreciate him enough. He has since he was young and energetic, now old but still wise.

The African Union needs someone like Raila Odinga. The man who will push to have Africa have a seat at the table where it is respected and adored. Raila said, “I believe that Africa is playing in a league that it should not play in.. and that it deserves better.”

“I have served in the AU in the capacity of high representative, it gave me a good advantage to be able to learn about every African country for what they have and the comparative advantages and I believe that by walking together with the countries we can make Africa great,” he added.

Let Baba go and serve the continent. Let him go and bring peace to Khartoum, Sudan. Let him go and resolve the conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Let him go and cool the temperatures between Rwanda and Burundi. It is time.
