The Principal Secretary (PS) for the National Treasury and Economic Planning Dr Chris Kiptoo, CBS, has called on the business community to proactively pay their correct share of taxes and champion compliance initiatives to enable the government to provide critical services and development programs.

The PS was speaking during a stakeholder engagement event bringing together the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) and the Eldoret Business Association, where he reiterated the Government’s commitment to revenue-driven fiscal allocation.

“I want to encourage everyone to be patriotic and pay their correct share of taxes; this will create a fair and competitive business environment, grow our economy, and enable us to be self-reliant,” he said.

The Commissioner General Mr. Humphrey Wattanga in his remarks said that KRA has been implementing a more facilitative service-focused approach in tax collection while making it easy to pay taxes. “We are keen to get honest feedback from the Business Community to enable us to improve our service offering to taxpayers,” he said. He reiterated KRA’s commitment to collaborate with stakeholders in implementing compliance support programs that respond to taxpayers’ unique needs.

The Chairman of the Eldoret Business Association, Mr. Jackson Kiprono welcomed the rallying call by the PS and committed to continuously engage with KRA to resolve various taxation challenges affecting them and strengthen tax compliance. His comments were echoed by the President of the Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry Dr Erick Rutto, who committed to work with all business associations to advocate for quality policy proposals that will enhance domestic resource mobilization and spur Kenya’s economic growth.

KRA is currently implementing country-wide stakeholder engagement forums to enhance tax literacy and promote goodwill for the payment of taxes.
