Ezekiel Machogu postponed the reopening of school past midnight, getting millions of parents, teachers, and learners unawares. Most learners who come from far areas away from their school had already started their journey to their respective schools.

Some of the learners had arrived in Nairobi and other places when the announcement from the Cabinet Secretary came through. According to the CS, the schools will be reopened on May 6, 2024, pushing it one more week due to the ongoing floods that have ravaged most parts of the country.

But why make the announcement in the middle of the night like night-runners?

Sources within the Ministry of Education say that Ezekiel Machogu is not to blame but Statehouse. The source says that on Friday the previous week, the Ministry of Education recommended the school reopening to pushed out by one week, but was told to wait for a final direction from President William Ruto.

They followed up with statehouse on Wednesday and was told the decision hasn’t been made because the President had been engaged on other issues and His Chief of Staff, the only other person allowed to make such decisions in statehouse was also busy. It is on Sunday midnight/Monday morning that someone at statehouse gave the okay and a communication release.
