9 Things You Need To File Your Tax Returns

The deadline for filing your tax returns is on June 30, 2024. It is a race against time as the days keep on melting by. The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has been sending constant reminders to Kenyans to have them file their returns on time.

But we are Kenyans and being Kenyans is our business. We love the last-minute rush and KRA should better have their systems ready for the last-minute traffic that will hit them.

All-in-all, here are the 9 things you need to file your tax returns on or before June 30.

  • KRA PIN
  • iTax account Password
  • A gadget with internet connectivity (phone, laptop, tablet, etc.)
  • 2023 P9 form (s) (for Employment Income)
  • 2023 Withholding tax certificates (where applicable)
  • Updated books of accounts for filers in sole proprietorship
  • 2023 Insurance certificate(s) (where applicable)
  • 2023 Mortgage certificate (s) (where applicable)
  • Tax exemption certificate (where applicable)

Why do we file returns anyway?

  • It is a requirement in the law – under the Income Tax Act.
  • From your self-assessment, enables you to know how much KRA owes you, if any.
  • Enables you to know if you have any tax due and if so, how much.
  • Enables KRA to identify those who do not pay taxes.
  • Enhances transparency in taxation as well as improved compliance concerning return filing and full disclosure.
