What If Dr. Mercy Mwangangi Replaced Susan Nakhumicha At Afya House?

All is not well at Afya House. There is no doubt that the Ministry of Health is sick and on its deathbed unless something is done urgently. Our doctors and medical practitioners are keeping vigil through cold nights just to be addressed but no one within the Ministry seems to care.

Susan Nakhumicha is the Cabinet Secretary for Health in the Republic of Kenya. Only the person who appointed her knows why he did so because if you would like to see the face of incompetence, you only need to look at a picture of Susan Nakhumicha.

With her mismatched makeup, Nakhumicha often seems sleepy and drunk, with no technical grasp of the country’s health priorities even before the President and she often appears as though she has no idea whether she is in charge of a cattle dip project in Trans Nzoia or the whole Ministry of Health.

That said and done, thinking of how disastrous Susan Nakhumicha has reminded me of one suave Dr. Mercy Mwangangi, a fine lady and polished health professional. This lady was the Chief Administrative Secretary (CAS) in the Ministry of Health in Uhuru Kenyatta’s administration.

To start with, Mercy is a real doctor with real medical academic papers. Here record is clear starting from the initiation and midwife of the Universal Health Coverage (UHC) program in Kenya. Her record at the Ministry of Health is also as clear as the day especially how she handled the COVID-19 pandemic. She is sober, articulate, and knows what needs to be done at the Ministry.

The current occupier at Afya House has some imaginary academic papers that only she knows where they came from. All calls for her to produce her papers have fallen on deaf ears. Why would a whole Ministry of Health be in the hands of someone who has no idea what is supposed to be done?

Call me a hater but Nakhumicha needs “lighter duties” that are away from dealing with human life. And where is Dr. Mercy Mwangangi when we need her the most?
