Intern teachers to start receiving new salaries from the Teachers Service Commission, TSC, after receiving money for confirming them to permanent terms
According to Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba, Ksh 18.7 billion has already been released to confirm 46,000 intern teachers. He added that 13.5 billion shillings have been released to implement the teacher’s phase 2 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).
“I am pleased to announce the release of Ksh 18.7 billion for hiring intern teachers and 13.5 billion to implement the CBA on salary increments. We are committed to uplifting the standards of education and ensuring our teachers are well compensated,” said Ogamba.
TSC has extended the contracts of intern teachers recruited in September 2023 by four months, from September 1st to December 31st, 2024.
TSC CEO Nancy Macharia directed that the contracts be extended to those intern teachers who are willing. Macharia also asked interns to fill out forms ahead of the August 31 expiry of the current job agreement.

The decision to extend the contracts of intern teachers is aimed at maintaining the continuity of education in schools while preparing for a larger recruitment exercise scheduled for October this year
According to TSC CEO Nancy Macharia, the extension of intern teachers is to allow the current cohort of intern teachers to remain in school until the end of the year, providing a seamless transition into the new academic year.
In October, this year, TSC is also planning to recruit 20,000 intern teachers. Of these, 18,000 will be for junior secondary schools and 2,000 for primary.
On its payroll, TSC has a total of 46,000 teachers serving on internship terms. These are 21,550 junior school and 4,000 primary school intern teachers recruited in February 2023.
450 secondary school intern teachers were recruited in April 2023. 18,000 junior schools and 2,000 primary school intern teachers were recruited in September 2023.
