The 9Th African Economic Zones Annual General Meeting Kicks Off In Nairobi

The Africa Economic Zones Organization (AEZO) and the African Union Commission (AUC) – Department of Economic Development, Trade, Tourism, Industry, and Minerals are holding the 9th African Special Economic Zones Annual Meeting.

This landmark event is taking place from 27th to 29th November 2024 at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) in Nairobi, Kenya.

Themed “Building Resilient, Inclusive & Sustainable Economies: The Role of African SEZs in Attracting Impactful Investments & Redefining Competitiveness,” this year’s gathering will explore the vital role of Special Economic Zones (SEZs) in Africa’s economic transformation.

Hosted by Kenya’s Special Economic Zones Authority (SEZA) and the Ministry of Trade, Investments, and Industry, the meeting will attract over 400 participants, including experts, SEZ developers, and representatives from SEZs, Investment Promotion Agencies, and other key stakeholders across Africa.

The President of the Republic of Kenya, H.E. Dr. William Ruto, will officially open the Annual Meeting, and will be attended by other high-level dignitaries, including the Cabinet Secretary of the Ministry of Investments, Trade, and Industry (MITI), Hon. Salim Mvurya, and other government officials. Their participation emphasizes Kenya’s commitment to promoting sustainable development and enhancing the competitiveness of its SEZs as a key pillar of the country’s economic agenda.

The AEZO Annual Meeting will bring together top decision-makers to discuss the future of SEZs in Africa and their potential to support inclusive and sustainable development. With the continent’s growing focus on industrialization, the event will highlight how SEZs can drive impactful investment and reimagine Africa’s competitiveness on the global stage.

In addition to expert-led panels and discussions, the meeting will provide a platform for African SEZs to showcase their initiatives, network with international investors, and share insights into sustainable growth strategies. Key topics will include the role of SEZs in promoting sustainable industrialization and green growth, policy and regulatory framework of SEZs and Financing SEZs. The event’s agenda will also include site visits, distribution of AEZO Awards in recognition of key African SEZs and their significant contribution to the community, as well as other manifestations to culminate international cooperation between AEZO and its partners.

Kenya’s Special Economic Zones Authority CEO, Dr. Kenneth Chelule, EBS, emphasized the importance of this year’s meeting, stating, “This conference is a milestone for Kenya and the African continent as we seek to position SEZs as hubs for innovation, industrialization, and inclusive development. By hosting this event, we reaffirm our commitment to making Kenya a premier investment destination.”

AEZO, in collaboration with the African Union Commission (AUC), and in partnership with the following institutions; United Nations Industrial Development Organization UNIDO, United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), African Development Bank (AfDB), European Union (EU), Ministry of Investments, Trade and Industry (MITI) and Special Economic Zones Authority (SEZA), is committed to nurturing strong partnerships and knowledge exchange among African SEZs. The meeting will serve as a significant milestone in strengthening Africa’s positioning as a competitive and sustainable investment destination.
