Kenyan Shillings Maintains Resilience Against The US Dollar With Slight 0.06% Shedding

KEY POINTS

Total equity turnover decreased by 11.79% to close at USD 2.29 MN (KES 296.97 BN) compared to Friday's turnover of USD 2.59 MN (KES  336.45 MN).

NSE 20 and NASI rose by 0.29% and 1.08% to close at 1,866.73 and 112.74 respectively.

Exchange Rate Performance

  • USD|KES: KES weakened by 0.06% to close at 129.76 (17.07% year-to-date).

  • GBP|KES: KES strengthened by 0.10% to close at 164.65 (17.59% year-to-date).

  • EUR|KES: KES strengthened by 0.39% to close at 136.56 (21.42% year-to-date).

Kenyan Stock Market

Total equity turnover decreased by 11.79% to close at USD 2.29 MN (KES 296.97 BN) compared to Friday’s turnover of USD 2.59 MN (KES  336.45 MN).

NSE 20 and NASI rose by 0.29% and 1.08% to close at 1,866.73 and 112.74 respectively.

Foreign investors assumed a net selling position by accounting for 65.04% of total market purchases and 75.60% of total market sales.

Indices

The market closed on a bullish note, with the NASI, N10, NSE 20 and NSE 25 rising by 1.1%, 0.9%, 0.3% and 0.8%, respectively.

Turnover

Equity turnover contracted by 11.7% to USD 2.3m. Foreign investors dominated market activity, accounting for 70.3% of the day’s turnover levels, down from 71.8% at the close of last week.

Counters

Safaricom was the most traded stock, accounting for 67.4% of the day’s turnover. The counter’s price function strengthened by 2.3% to KES 15.35, largely driven by foreign investor activity. The stock closed as the day’s best-performing top mover.

Amongst the top mover banking stocks, Equity Group, Cooperative Bank, DTB and I&M edged upwards by 0.1%, 0.4%, 1.4% and 1.2% to KES 45.05, KES 13.85, KES 54.25 and KES 30.45, respectively.

Kenya Power’s price function weakened by 1.8% to close as the worst-performing top mover at KES 4.45. Worth noting is that the counter’s KES 0.70 final dividend book closure is slated for today.

Olympia was the day’s top gainer, up 9.2% to KES 3.20 while Nairobi Business Ventures shed 4.3% to KES 2.00 – closing as the leading laggard.

Foreign net flows

Foreign investors turned bearish in the session, with net outflows of USD 241.8k. Kenya Power led the buying charge while Safaricom led the selling charge.
