The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) through a gazette notice, has announced that it has permanently deregistered the appointment of 33 teachers across the country.

In the gazette notice dated February 14, 2025, TSC Chief Executive Officer Nancy Macharia announced that the move was made by the powers granted under Section 30(2) of the Teachers Service Commission Act.

“In exercise of powers conferred by section 30(1) € of the Teachers Service Commission Act, Chapter 212 of the Laws of Kenya, the Commission wishes to notify the public that the persons whose names are specified in the Schedule herein below have been removed from the Register of Teachers under the provisions of section 30(2) of the Teachers Service Commission Act,” the Gazette notice read.

According to TSC, the name of any teacher removed from the register under this Act, shall not be reinstated except by direction of the Commission.

TSC clarified that the teachers had been deregistered following the disciplinary process, indicating possible professional transgressions by the listed individuals. Section 30 of the TSC Act, a teacher can be removed from the register due to several reasons, mainly stemming from misconduct.

Obtaining registration through fraudulent means, conviction of a sexual offense, conviction of a criminal offense, and physical or mental illness rendering the teacher incapable of performing duties are among some of the reasons the TSC can deregister a tutor.

School heads have since been cautioned against employing individuals not registered under the TSC in any capacity, as they risk a fine of not less than KSh100,000 or two years of imprisonment.

“Further to the provisions of the TSC Act, Regulation 18(1)© and (d) of the Code of Regulations for Teachers, as read together with Section 45 of the TSC Act, states that any person who is not a registered teacher under the Act and engages in teaching or assists in teaching at any school violates the law,” the notice added.

In August 2024, 33 teachers who were struck from the commission were deregistration from the TSC.
