Qhala Moves To Embed AI Into Classrooms

BY Soko Directory Team · June 21, 2025 09:06 am

Starting June 21, a series of activities focused on integrating Artificial Intelligence into education systems in Kenya and select African countries begins.

In an event dubbed Africa AI Week 2025, Qhala, together with several partners are hosting a series of events from 21 28 June, which will among other things see teachers being trained on AI across Kenya (Nairobi, Nakuru, Kilifi, Kisumu, Mt. Kenya) and in Zambia, Senegal, Togo and online.

The theme for Africa AI Week this year, “AI in My Language, My Classroom, My Future,” is more than a slogan—it’s a movement to democratize AI literacy across every level of Africa’s education ecosystem. From early childhood to tertiary education, the initiative is focused on building long-term capacity and embedding responsible, African-led AI education directly into national curricula.

“To cultivate a strong talent pipeline, we must start early—by equipping young minds with the skills and curiosity to shape Africa’s AI-driven future. It’s not just about catching up; it’s about positioning the continent to lead and thrive in the global AI economy,” said Barbara Osiro, who is the Project Manager for the event.

The launch event brings together educators, policymakers, students, startups, and curriculum experts for a morning of live panels, showcases, and conversations on how AI can drive Africa’s future. This week, close to 700 educators across various regions will be trained in foundational AI concepts. These teachers, all registered with their national

Teachers Service Commissions (TSC) will serve as multipliers in classrooms nationwide.

Throughout the week, participating hubs will host:

Train-the-Trainer (TOT) sessions for 200+ educators per location

Hackathons for children and tertiary-level learners

AI literacy workshops in both urban and rural settings

Expert-led conversations on the ethics and practicalities of AI in African contexts

EdTech showcases of real-world African AI solutions

“We are not just talking about AI—we are training teachers, influencing policy, and designing curricula. If AI is the future of work, Africa must prepare from the classroom up. These eorts position Africa not as a passive consumer of global technology trends, but as a shaper of responsible and inclusive AI applications—rooted in context, culture, and continent-wide collaboration,” declared Dr. Shikoh Gitau, Qhala CEO.

The Africa AI Week 2025 is a call for stakeholders to co-create sustainable AI learning journeys, including efforts to contribute to the curriculum, co-design pilots, and engage with ministries of education.

This initiative is not a one-o campaign. It’s part of Qhala’s longer-term ambition to influence curriculum reform in Kenya and across Africa, drawing inspiration from countries like China, which have already begun integrating AI into formal education.

The post-launch agenda includes a July policy roundtable with curriculum developers, national ministries, and continental actors, where AI’s place in national education strategies will be further mapped out.
