Kenya Met Lists Regions Set To Experience Rain And Cold Weather Over The Next 5 Days

The Kenya Meteorological Department (Kenya Met) has issued a comprehensive five-day weather forecast, urging Kenyans in several regions to prepare for continued rainfall, low temperatures, and strong winds from Tuesday, July 8 to Saturday, July 12.

According to the official advisory of Kenya Met, varying weather conditions are expected across the country, with certain regions likely to experience persistent rain, chilly temperatures, and gusty winds, while others will remain largely sunny but breezy.

In its weekly update, the Kenya Met highlighted that residents living in the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, parts of the Rift Valley, and North-western Kenya should brace for sustained rainfall and cold temperatures throughout the forecast period.

The affected counties include Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka, and Nairobi, where light to moderate showers and rain are expected both during the day and at night.

Temperatures in these counties will remain relatively low, with maximum daytime temperatures peaking at 24°C and minimum nighttime temperatures expected to dip to 9°C. These chilly conditions are expected to pose challenges, especially for residents in high-altitude areas who may already be feeling the effects of the ongoing cold season.

The forecast also warns of strong southerly to south-easterly winds exceeding 25 knots (approximately 12.86 meters per second). These gusts are expected to affect areas along the Coast, the South-eastern lowlands, as well as North-eastern and North-western Kenya.

This could result in rough sea conditions along the Indian Ocean, potentially affecting fishing and maritime activities. Inland, the strong winds may stir up dust and disrupt transportation, particularly in arid and semi-arid counties such as Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, Isiolo, and Turkana.

Counties such as Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado, and Taita Taveta, along with inland areas of Tana River County, are forecasted to experience sunny days and partly cloudy nights for most of the week. According to the forecast, these regions will enjoy maximum temperatures of up to 30°C, while nighttime lows will hover around 13°C.

Although no significant rainfall is expected in these areas, residents have been urged to remain cautious of strong winds that may affect outdoor activities and possibly damage weak infrastructure.

Along the coast, including Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, and Kwale, as well as the coastal belt of Tana River, the week is expected to bring a mix of sunny intervals and occasional showers, particularly in the mornings and evenings.

The forecast Indicates that Tuesday will be mostly sunny throughout the day, while Wednesday and Saturday mornings may see some light rain. Friday and Saturday nights are expected to remain partly cloudy. The temperatures in these counties are projected to remain relatively warm, with daytime highs around 30°C and minimum temperatures of 21°C during the night.

A large portion of Western Kenya, as well as parts of the Rift Valley, will see continued rainfall, often accompanied by thunderstorms. Counties expected to be most affected include Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia, and West Pokot.

In these regions, residents are warned to prepare for daylong showers and possible flooding in low-lying areas, especially where drainage is poor. Temperatures will vary significantly, with maximum temperatures rising to 35°C, while minimums may drop to as low as 10°C in elevated zones.

In Turkana and Samburu counties, rainfall will be less intense but still present. The Kenya Met forecasts intermittent showers over a few places, accompanied by occasional thunderstorms, both during the day and at night. The daytime temperatures are expected to reach up to 35°C, while nighttime temperatures may fall to 10°C, particularly in the cooler parts of Samburu.

For counties in the far north and north-east, including Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, and Isiolo, the outlook is significantly drier. The Kenya Met Department predicts that these counties will experience daylong sunny conditions, with partly cloudy skies during the night. Despite the sunshine, strong winds and dry air may contribute to discomfort, especially in already arid areas.

Temperatures are forecast to be high, with daytime highs of 35°C and minimum temperatures dipping to about 14°C overnight.

Transport operators, especially in the aviation and marine sectors, have been cautioned to monitor wind speeds and visibility conditions closely. Farmers have also been encouraged to plan their activities in line with the forecast to minimize disruptions and losses caused by unpredictable weather patterns.
