Kenya Met Names Regions Set To Experience High Temperatures This Week

Most parts of the country, including Nairobi and several counties in Central, Eastern and Coastal Kenya, are expected to experience predominantly sunny and dry weather over the next five days, the Kenya Meteorological Department has said.

In its latest five-day forecast covering the period from Tuesday, January 27, to Saturday, January 31, the department indicated that rainfall will remain minimal in many regions, with daytime temperatures rising steadily and some areas recording highs of up to 30°C and above.

Nairobi and most counties in the Central and Upper Eastern regions, namely Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu and Tharaka Nithi, will largely experience sunny and dry conditions throughout the week.

However, the weatherman noted that a few isolated areas could receive light afternoon showers on Tuesday and Wednesday. Minimum temperatures in these highland areas are expected to drop to as low as 6°C, especially during the early morning hours.

Similar conditions are forecast for parts of Eastern and Southern Rift regions, including Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado and Taita Taveta counties, as well as the inland parts of Tana River County.

These areas will remain mostly sunny and dry, except for Wednesday afternoon when scattered showers may occur in a few locations. Maximum temperatures in these counties are expected to rise to about 32°C, while minimum temperatures will average around 14°C.

Along the Coast, residents of Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu and Kwale counties, together with the coastal parts of Tana River County, will experience sunny conditions throughout the week. The department forecast warm and humid conditions, with daytime temperatures climbing to a maximum of 33°C and nighttime temperatures remaining relatively high at around 22°C.

In the northern and northeastern parts of the country, Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa and Isiolo counties are expected to experience sunny and hot weather conditions for most of the week. According to the forecast, temperatures in these areas could rise to a high of 38°C during the day, with minimum temperatures falling to about 16°C at night.

Turkana and Samburu counties will also experience predominantly sunny conditions, with occasional partly cloudy skies during the day. The weatherman forecast maximum temperatures of up to 37°C in these areas. Residents have been advised to take precautions against heat-related conditions due to the persistently high temperatures.

The Kenya Meteorological Department further warned of strong northeasterly to southeasterly winds exceeding 25 knots (12.5 metres per second) over the northwestern and northeastern parts of the country, which could affect small boats, light structures and outdoor activities.

Meanwhile, parts of western Kenya, the Lake Victoria Basin and sections of the Rift Valley are expected to receive rainfall during most of the week.

Counties set to experience rains and showers include Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia and West Pokot.

According to the forecast, these areas will experience intermittent rains and showers on most days, with Thursday standing out as the only day when sunny conditions are expected to prevail throughout. Maximum temperatures in the region are forecast to reach about 31°C, while minimum temperatures could drop to as low as 7°C, particularly in high-altitude areas.

The department has advised residents across the country to plan their activities in line with the prevailing weather conditions and to take necessary precautions, especially in regions experiencing high temperatures, strong winds or persistent rainfall.
