The National Youth Service (NYS) has officially kicked off a nationwide recruitment exercise aimed at enrolling thousands of young Kenyans into its training and service programmes.
According to NYS, the exercise, which began on Monday, March 16, is being conducted simultaneously across all sub-counties in the country and is expected to run until Saturday, March 21, 2026.
In a public notice released on Monday, the service confirmed that the recruitment process had started as earlier announced and encouraged eligible youth to present themselves at designated recruitment centres within their respective sub-counties.
The initiative forms part of the government’s ongoing efforts to empower young people through structured training, discipline, and employment opportunities.
According to the statement, the recruitment drive provides a platform for young Kenyans to join the NYS and benefit from a wide range of programmes designed to build practical skills while fostering patriotism and national service.
“NYS nationwide recruitment exercise has officially kicked off today across all sub-counties, as earlier advertised. The exercise will run from March 16 to March 21, 2026,” the statement read.
The agency further urged eligible youths to take advantage of the opportunity by attending the recruitment exercise in large numbers.
“Eligible young Kenyans are encouraged to turn up at their respective sub-county recruitment centres and seize this opportunity to serve the nation while gaining valuable skills, discipline, and training,” the statement added.
NYS is a state corporation mandated to train and empower young people through paramilitary training, national service, and vocational education. Over the years, the institution has played a critical role in preparing Kenyan youth for both public service and the broader labour market.
Through its programmes, recruits undergo rigorous training that focuses on discipline, teamwork, and technical competence. Participants are also equipped with hands-on vocational skills in fields such as construction, agriculture, mechanical works, and community development.
These skills are intended to help young people secure employment, start their own enterprises, or contribute meaningfully to national development initiatives after completing their training
Beyond training, NYS plays a vital role in supporting national development projects across the country. Graduates of the programme are often deployed to participate in government-led initiatives including infrastructure development, environmental conservation, disaster response, and community service programmes.
NYS personnel have previously been involved in projects such as road construction, housing development, irrigation programmes, and emergency relief operations during national disasters.
Through these initiatives, the service aims not only to equip youth with employable skills but also to instill a strong sense of civic responsibility and national pride.
The current recruitment exercise follows an earlier announcement by the agency regarding available job opportunities within the service. In a notice released on March 3, the NYS revealed that it was seeking to fill more than 700 positions across various categories.
The vacancies include 250 cadet officer positions and 500 private officer posts, providing opportunities for unemployed youth across the country to gain structured training and employment.
Among the private positions advertised are roles for drivers, plant operators, electricians, carpenters, plumbers, band members, agricultural workers, secretaries, vehicle mechanics, welders, and general duty personnel.
The positions are expected to attract a large number of applicants, particularly at a time when many young Kenyans are actively seeking employment and skills development opportunities.
Application Process and Deadline
Interested applicants were advised to download and complete the official Application for Employment Form available on the Public Service Commission website.
Completed applications can be submitted either via email or delivered by post to the Commandant General at the NYS Headquarters in Nairobi. The agency noted that all applications must be received before the deadline of March 18, 2026.
Officials have also reminded applicants to ensure that they meet the eligibility requirements and provide accurate documentation during the recruitment process.
With recruitment centres now open across the country, the exercise is expected to attract thousands of hopeful applicants eager to join the service and benefit from the training and opportunities offered by the NYS.
