Five people lost their lives while three others sustained injuries following a tragic road accident at Makotelo area along the busy Webuye-Malaba Highway in Bungoma County.

According to witnesses, the fatal crash occurred on Tuesday night, just minutes before midnight, sending shockwaves through residents living near the accident scene. The collision involved a public service vehicle and a trailer that was traveling towards Webuye from the Kanduyi direction.

Eyewitnesses described a horrifying scene as the two vehicles collided, leaving several passengers trapped in the wreckage. Residents and emergency responders rushed to the scene to assist the victims and rescue those who had survived the impact.

Confirming the incident, Bungoma South Officer Commanding Police Division William Letting said that five people died on the spot as a result of the crash. The deceased included three men and two women. Three other victims sustained injuries of varying degrees and were rushed to nearby medical facilities for treatment.

The accident once again raised concerns over road safety along the Webuye-Malaba Highway, a stretch that residents say has witnessed numerous accidents over the years. Locals who gathered at the scene called on the government and relevant road authorities to take immediate action by installing speed bumps and other traffic-calming measures in the area.

According to residents, speeding vehicles and heavy traffic have contributed to the increasing number of accidents along the road. They argued that introducing speed-control measures could help reduce crashes and save lives.

Meanwhile, tension emerged at the accident scene after police arrested four youths over allegations of looting from the wreckage. The arrests sparked reactions from members of the public, with some residents demanding the immediate release of the youths.

The residents claimed that the young men were unfairly targeted and urged police officers to conduct thorough investigations before taking legal action. Authorities have not yet provided further details regarding the arrests.

Investigations into the cause of the accident are ongoing.
