Kenya Met Lists Regions Set To Experience Extremely Chilly Weather Over The Next Seven Days

The Kenya Meteorological Service Authority (Kenya Met) has announced that the cold weather currently being experienced across several regions of the country is expected to persist for at least the next seven days, with the chilly conditions likely to continue until June 22.

In its latest weather forecast issued on June 15, Kenya Met warned that many parts of Kenya will continue to experience significantly low temperatures, particularly during the early morning and late evening hours.

Residents have been advised to prepare for colder-than-usual conditions and to take the necessary precautions to stay warm. Nairobi is among the areas expected to remain cold throughout the week.

According to the forecast, temperatures in the capital city are likely to drop to as low as 13°C during the mornings and nights, creating chilly conditions for commuters and residents alike. The cold spell is expected to be accompanied by cloudy mornings before sunshine breaks through later in the day.

Nyahururu is projected to be the coldest town in the country over the coming days, with nighttime temperatures expected to plunge to a frigid 4°C. Such temperatures are among the lowest recorded in Kenya and are likely to result in extremely cold nights and early mornings for residents in the region.

Other areas expected to experience particularly cold weather include Narok and Laikipia counties, where minimum temperatures are forecast to fall to around 8°C. Residents in these regions have been encouraged to dress warmly, especially during outdoor activities in the morning and evening hours.

The cold conditions will also be felt in several major towns across the Rift Valley. Nakuru, Eldoret, and Kericho are expected to record minimum temperatures ranging between 9°C and 11°C, with cold winds and cloudy conditions likely to make the weather feel even cooler than the actual temperatures.

While much of the country braces for chilly weather, the situation will be markedly different in the northern and north-eastern parts of Kenya. Counties such as Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, and Garissa are expected to continue experiencing hot and dry conditions.

Mandera is forecast to record the highest temperatures in the country this week, with daytime highs reaching a scorching 38°C. Along the coast, residents and visitors in Mombasa, Malindi, and Lamu will continue to enjoy relatively warm and pleasant weather.

Temperatures in these towns are expected to range between 30°C and 31°C during the day, maintaining the region’s characteristic tropical climate despite the cold spell affecting other parts of the country.

Despite the cold mornings and evenings, Kenya Met noted that many regions will still experience sunny intervals during the daytime. The sunshine is expected to provide temporary relief from the chilly conditions, particularly in the central highlands and parts of the Rift Valley.

However, residents should not be deceived by the sunshine, as temperatures are expected to drop significantly once the sun sets.

The weather authority has also cautioned that rainfall activity will continue in several areas. Afternoon and nighttime showers are expected in parts of the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, and neighbouring regions.

These intermittent rains could further contribute to the cold conditions being experienced across the country. Counties including Kisii, Kisumu, Bomet, Nandi, and Kakamega are forecast to receive a combination of sunshine and occasional heavy downpours throughout the week.

Residents in these areas have been advised to remain alert for sudden weather changes, especially during afternoon and evening hours when rainfall is most likely to occur.

In the Highlands East of the Rift Valley, including Murang’a, Kiambu, Nyeri, Meru, Nairobi, Kirinyaga, and Tharaka Nithi counties, mornings are expected to remain cloudy and cold before conditions gradually clear later in the day. The pattern is likely to persist throughout the forecast period.

Similarly, residents in the South-eastern lowlands covering Machakos, Kitui, Makueni, and Kajiado counties should prepare for occasional morning showers, followed by isolated afternoon rainfall in some areas.

The combination of rainfall and lower temperatures could result in cooler-than-normal conditions across the region.

As the cold season continues, Kenya Met has urged Kenyans, particularly those living in highland areas and the Rift Valley, to keep warm clothing readily available and to take precautions against cold-related illnesses.

Parents have also been encouraged to ensure that children are adequately dressed, especially when leaving home early in the morning or returning late in the evening.

The authority further advised farmers, motorists, and other road users to remain vigilant, as cold mornings, fog, and occasional rainfall may reduce visibility in some regions.

With temperatures expected to remain below average in many parts of the country, Kenyans are being encouraged to stay informed through regular weather updates and advisories issued by Kenya Met.
