WhatsApp Now Lets You Call Straight From Your Browser, No App Needed

WhatsApp has rolled out a new browser-based calling feature that finally does away with one of the platform’s longest-standing annoyances: having to download a separate desktop app just to make a call from your computer.

The update lets users place and receive both audio and video calls, whether one-on-one or in a group, directly through WhatsApp Web.

In practice, that means anyone who’s ever opened WhatsApp on a work laptop or a shared computer only to hit a wall when trying to call someone can now do it right from the browser, no installation required.

The company says the update is aimed squarely at people who’ve been boxed out of the full WhatsApp experience because of where or how they access it- think shared family computers, office machines with restricted app permissions, or public terminals where downloading anything simply isn’t an option.

It’s not just a stripped-down version either. The browser experience is getting screen sharing, in-call reactions, and its own tab for call history and favourite contacts, essentially bringing it in line with what’s already available on the app.

WhatsApp has also been quick to reassure users on the privacy front. Calls made through the browser will stay end-to-end encrypted, just like on mobile, with no time limits and no extra charges attached.

Alongside the browser update, the platform is introducing something it’s calling call transfer — a feature that lets users move an ongoing group call between their phone, desktop and browser without the call dropping.

It’s the kind of small convenience that could matter a lot if you’re mid-conversation and need to switch devices, say when you’re heading out the door, or your laptop is about to die.

Together, these updates push WhatsApp’s calling features further across devices and platforms, while the company insists none of its usual privacy protections are being loosened in the process.

The rollout won’t happen all at once. WhatsApp says the features are being introduced gradually, with users around the world expected to get access over the coming weeks rather than immediately.

A few other additions are coming along for the ride. There’s a new Waiting Room feature, which gives hosts more control over group calls started through a call link, letting them approve who joins before they’re let in. There’s also QuickHD, designed to get video calls looking sharp within the first few seconds rather than gradually improving as the call goes on.

Rounding out the update is a noise suppression tool built to cut down background noise and keep voices clear, even in busier or noisier environments. Users will be able to switch it on or adjust it through the in-call settings menu.
