ADFS Top 10: The Men Shaping Digital Finance in Kenya

Kenya has long been Africa’s proving ground for financial innovation, the birthplace of M-Pesa and a magnet for fintech capital across the continent. Behind that reputation sits a group of bankers, engineers, and entrepreneurs steering the institutions and startups that are pushing financial inclusion further. As part of its ADFS Top 10 series, the Africa Digital Finance Summit recognizes ten men currently shaping that landscape. Here’s a closer look at who they are and why they matter.
John Gachora: Group Managing Director & CEO, NCBA Group
Few names capture Kenyan banking’s evolution over the past decade better than John Gachora’s. Born in Gatamaiyu village in Central Kenya as the eighth of thirteen children, Gachora went from Alliance High School to MIT, where he earned both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in electrical engineering, before completing an MBA at Wharton. His early career took him deep into global finance — as a Managing Director at Bank of America Securities in Charlotte, North Carolina, and later as Managing Director for Corporate and Investment Banking at Barclays Africa.
That combination of Wall Street structuring expertise and African market knowledge has defined his leadership at NCBA Group, which he has run since its formation. NCBA was born out of one of the most consequential mergers in East African banking history, the 2019 combination of NIC Bank and Commercial Bank of Africa, and Gachora was central to integrating the two institutions’ systems, staff, and customer bases during a genuinely difficult transition. He has since steered the group through the pandemic, restructuring hundreds of millions of dollars in loans while keeping the balance sheet resilient, and has pushed an aggressive digital-and-branch hybrid strategy: NCBA’s mobile app is consistently rated among the highest in Kenya, and the bank has become a leader in digital credit even as it continues opening new branches designed as sales points rather than traditional service counters.
Under his watch, NCBA Group has grown into a regional banking conglomerate with subsidiaries across Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, and Rwanda — a scale that places Gachora among the most influential architects of digital banking in East Africa today.
Sitoyo Lopokoiyit: Chief Executive: Personal & Private Banking, Absa Group
Lopokoiyit oversees one of Absa’s largest business lines across its African footprint, with a mandate that touches digital retail banking, private wealth, and the products millions of everyday customers rely on. His role puts him at the center of how a major pan-African banking group is digitizing consumer finance beyond Kenya’s borders.
Dr. Peter Ndegwa: Group Chief Executive Officer, Safaricom PLC
As head of Safaricom, Ndegwa leads the company behind M-Pesa, the mobile money platform that redefined financial inclusion not just in Kenya but globally. His tenure has focused on defending and extending Safaricom’s dominance in mobile money while expanding the group’s footprint into new markets, including Ethiopia.
Dr. James Mwangi: Managing Director & CEO, Equity Group Holdings
Mwangi is one of the most decorated figures in African banking, having built Equity from a struggling building society into one of the continent’s largest financial services groups. Equity’s model of low-cost, high-volume retail banking and its aggressive push into mobile and agency banking has made it a template studied well beyond Kenya.
Dr. Joshua Oigara: CEO, Stanbic Holdings PLC; Regional CEO, East Africa, Standard Bank Group
Oigara moved to Stanbic and Standard Bank Group after a long tenure leading KCB Group, bringing with him deep experience running large, systemically important banks. His current dual role gives him oversight of Standard Bank’s East African strategy at a moment when regional banking groups are competing hard for cross-border digital market share.
Jesse Moore: Co-Founder & CEO, M-Kopa
Moore co-founded M-Kopa, the pay-as-you-go asset financing company that has used mobile money and connected devices to extend credit to millions of previously unbanked customers across Africa. M-Kopa’s model — financing everything from solar power to smartphones through small daily repayments — has become one of the continent’s most-cited fintech success stories in expanding access to credit.
Eddie Ndichu: Co-Founder & CEO, WapiPay
Ndichu co-founded WapiPay in 2019 with his twin brother Paul, building a cross-border payments platform focused on trade and remittance flows between Africa and Asia. The company has since expanded well beyond that original corridor, launching a remittance-based credit-scoring tool to help Kenyan lenders assess diaspora-linked borrowers, and picking up regulatory approvals to operate in Jamaica and, most recently, Canada. WapiPay’s growth reflects a broader trend of Kenyan-founded fintechs building genuinely global payment rails rather than staying confined to domestic markets.
David Nandwa: Founder & CEO, HoneyCoin
Nandwa founded HoneyCoin to tackle one of Africa’s fintechs’ persistent pain points: fast, affordable cross-border payments for businesses. The platform focuses on helping companies move money across African currencies and internationally without the delays and costs typical of legacy correspondent banking.
Ali Hussein Kassim: Chairman, AFIK; Executive Board Member, Africa Fintech Network
Kassim is a longstanding voice in Kenyan fintech policy and advocacy, holding leadership roles at both the Association of Fintechs in Kenya and the Africa Fintech Network. His influence comes less from running a single company and more from shaping the regulatory and industry conversations that determine how the whole sector grows.
Mark Mwongela Ngugi: Group Director, Strategy & Innovation, KCB Group
Mwongela sits at the center of KCB Group’s innovation agenda, one of Kenya’s largest banks by assets. His role focuses on shaping the strategic bets — digital products, partnerships, and new business lines — that will determine how a legacy institution like KCB competes with both agile fintechs and other digitizing banks.
