NTSA Rolls Out SMS Alerts For Vehicle Transfers As Motorists Decry Endless Delays

Kenyan motorists frustrated by months of silence over stalled vehicle ownership transfers may finally get some relief, after the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) announced it would begin notifying applicants of their transfer status directly via text message.
NTSA announced in a statement issued on Thursday, August 13, saying every notification tied to a transfer application will now land straight in the applicant’s phone.
“All transfer service notifications are sent straight to your phone via SMS,” the NTSA said, urging motorists to keep an eye on their handsets rather than relying solely on the online portal to track their applications.
The change follows weeks, and in some cases months, of mounting frustration from car owners who say they have been left completely in the dark after initiating transfers and paying the requisite fees.
For many, the process has felt like shouting into a void: money paid, documents submitted, and then nothing. No confirmation, no rejection notice, no indication of what happens next.
The irony is that this entire process was supposed to be fast. NTSA had earlier moved vehicle transfers online as part of a broader push to digitise its services, with officials promising that the shift would cut turnaround time down to just a single day.
On paper, that sounded like a major win for an agency long associated with long queues and bureaucratic bottlenecks.
Instead of the promised 24-hour turnaround, some have watched their applications sit untouched for weeks, occasionally stretching into months.
Worse still, a number of these transfers were quietly rejected, with the affected owners having no way of knowing unless they happened to log back into the portal and dig around for answers.
That uncertainty forced many car owners into a frustrating routine: repeatedly logging into the NTSA online system just to check whether anything had changed, often with nothing new to show for it.
Motor vehicle transfer agents, who deal with these applications on behalf of clients daily, have echoed the complaints, noting that even they have struggled to get clarity from the portal, particularly in cases where a transfer had already been turned down. The system, they say, simply wasn’t built to flag rejections in a way that ordinary users could easily see.
With the introduction of SMS alerts, NTSA is hoping to close that communication gap. Rather than applicants having to guess or repeatedly check online, the authority says updates will now be pushed automatically to their phones at each stage of the process, whether the transfer has been approved, rejected, or is still sitting in the pending queue.
For this to work as intended, however, motorists have been reminded that the phone number linked to their application needs to be active and reachable.
An outdated or disconnected line, officials note, would defeat the entire purpose of the new system, leaving applicants back where they started.
If it functions as promised, the SMS notification system could spare car owners the hassle of endless portal check-ins or physical trips to NTSA offices just to ask about the status of a transfer.
Instead, a simple text message would tell them everything they need to know, cutting out the guesswork that has defined the experience for so many in recent months.
Whether the rollout will be smooth, and whether it will genuinely restore confidence among motorists who have grown wary of NTSA’s digital systems, remains to be seen.
But for now, the authority is betting that a straightforward text message can succeed where the online portal has, for many, fallen short.
