Amsons Group Launches Construction of First of 10 Mother and Child Hospitals

Amsons Group, the parent company of Bamburi Cement and East African Portland Cement (EAPC), will invest Sh4.5 billion to build 10 Mother and Child Level 4 hospitals across Kenya as part of efforts to expand access to maternal, newborn and child healthcare.

The group has already broken ground for the first facility, the Chebunyo Mother and Child Hospital in Bomet County, marking the start of a two-year programme to establish the hospitals in underserved areas.

Amsons Group Managing Director Edha Nahdi said the facilities will be developed through the Amsons Group Foundation under the company’s Amsons Mama na Mtoto Kwanza initiative.

“This ceremony marks the beginning of a major commitment by Amsons Group to support the Government of Kenya in improving access to quality maternal, newborn and child healthcare,” Nahdi said.

“Through Amsons Group Foundation, we are investing US$35 million to establish ten mother-and-child hospitals across Kenya within two years. This Level 4 facility in Chebunyo is the first of those ten hospitals and will set the standard for the facilities that will follow.”

The hospitals will be developed under a Build, Equip and Transfer (BoT) model in partnership with the Ministry of Health, with each facility expected to have a capacity of 250 beds.

The facilities will be constructed in Bomet, Nairobi, Kwale, Mombasa, Garissa, Kisumu, Embu, Nakuru, Uasin Gishu and West Pokot counties.

The project is expected to strengthen healthcare services for women and children by providing inpatient, referral, emergency and critical care, alongside diagnostic and treatment services.

Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale attended the groundbreaking ceremony alongside President William Ruto, who said the investment would complement government efforts to expand and improve Kenya’s health infrastructure.

Ruto said the government is implementing the Health Systems Strengthening (HSS) project to increase the number of adequately equipped healthcare facilities, particularly Level 4 and Level 5 hospitals.

Under the partnership, national and county governments are expected to support the facilities after completion, including through the provision of healthcare workers and medical supplies.

The 10 hospitals are expected to be completed within two years, with Chebunyo serving as the first facility under the Amsons Mama na Mtoto Kwanza project.
