The Kenya Meteorological Service Authority (Kenya Met) has released its weekly forecast, covering September 15 to 21, 2026, and the capital is among a long list of counties expected to see rainfall over that period.
Nairobi isn’t alone; the Kenya Met, dated September 14, points to wet weather touching down in parts of Baringo, Bomet, Bungoma, Busia, Elgeyo Marakwet, Homa Bay, Kakamega, Kisii, Kisumu, and Kilifi.
Add to that Mombasa, Kwale, Nakuru, Nandi, Nyamira, Siaya, Tana River, Taita Taveta, Wajir, and West Pokot, and it’s clear this isn’t a localised drizzle; it’s a fairly wide band of the country expected to get some rain this week.

The authority’s statement names rainfall expected in parts of Baringo, Bomet, Bungoma, Busia, Elgeyo/Marakwet, Embu, Garissa, Homa Bay, Kajiado, Kakamega, Kericho, Kiambu, Kilifi, Kirinyaga, Kisii, Kisumu, Kitui, Kwale, Laikipia, Lamu, Machakos, Makueni, Mandera, Marsabit, Meru, Migori, Mombasa, Murang’a, Nairobi, Nakuru, Nandi, Narok, Nyamira, Nyandarua, Nyeri, Siaya, Taita/Taveta, Tana River, Tharaka-Nithi, Trans Nzoia, Uasin Gishu, Vihiga, Wajir, and West Pokot counties.
Weather patterns won’t look the same from morning to night, and Kenya Met has broken the forecast down accordingly.
Mornings are expected to bring showers to several parts of Kwale, Mombasa, Kilifi, Tana River, and Lamu. A handful of areas further inland, including Murang’a, Kirinyaga, Embu, Nyeri, Tharaka-Nithi, Meru, Nairobi, Kiambu, Nyandarua, Marsabit, Wajir, and Mandera, could also see light morning rain in isolated pockets.
By afternoon, things pick up, with showers and thunderstorms forecast for several parts of Baringo, Bomet, Bungoma, Busia, Elgeyo Marakwet, Homa Bay, Kakamega, Kericho, Kisii, Kisumu, Migori, Nakuru, Nandi, Narok, Nyamira, Siaya, Trans Nzoia, Uasin Gishu, and Vihiga.
The afternoon rain is also expected to reach parts of Embu, Kiambu, Kirinyaga, Kwale, Lamu, Kilifi, Meru, Mombasa, Murang’a, Nairobi, Nyandarua, Nyeri, and Tharaka-Nithi, with a few showers possible elsewhere too.
At night, the rain doesn’t fully let up either, except for scattered showers in parts of Kilifi, Mombasa, Nairobi, Kiambu, Meru, Murang’a, Nakuru, Nyeri, Siaya, Tana River, Tharaka-Nithi, Trans Nzoia, Uasin Gishu, and Vihiga.
It’s worth noting that none of this means entire counties will be soaked; Kenya Met is careful to point out that these conditions apply only to specific parts of the counties listed, not blanket coverage across each one.
While much of the country braces for rain, a few areas will stay largely dry this week. Isiolo, Mandera, Marsabit, Samburu, Turkana, and Wajir can expect sunny intervals for much of the forecast period, according to KMSA, a reminder of just how much Kenya’s weather can vary from one region to the next, even within the same seven-day stretch.
