Dangote Refinery Valuation Jumps 59.4% as SIB Upgrades Stock to Buy

Standard Investment Bank (SIB) has upgraded its recommendation on Dangote Petroleum Refinery & Petrochemicals from Hold to Buy, raising its fair value estimate by 40 per cent following stronger-than-expected operational performance in the third quarter of 2026.
In a valuation update dated October 21, 2026, SIB increased its fair value estimate for the refinery from $0.45 (NGN602.18) to $0.63 (NGN836.80), implying a potential upside of 59.4 per cent relative to the offer price, compared with the previous estimate of 14.7 per cent.
The investment bank attributed the revised outlook to improved refining efficiency, better product yields and stronger cash generation, which it expects to support the company’s earnings and financial performance over the medium term.
The latest assessment follows the release of Dangote Petroleum Refinery & Petrochemicals’ preliminary third-quarter 2026 figures, which prompted SIB to revise its financial model and reassess the company’s valuation.
According to the research report, the refinery’s performance confirms that operational improvements could deliver returns beyond the bank’s initial projections, particularly through the production of higher-value petroleum products.
SIB said its original investment case had already anticipated additional growth opportunities from yield optimisation and operational efficiency. However, the latest performance indicates that these gains could be more significant than initially expected.
A key factor behind the improved valuation is the refinery’s ability to convert a greater proportion of heavy, lower-value residual oils into higher-margin products, including petrol, diesel and jet fuel.
This process, known as cracking, breaks down heavier hydrocarbon molecules into lighter products that typically command higher market values. Improved cracking efficiency allows a refinery to extract more valuable products from each barrel of crude oil processed.
SIB expects stronger performance in this area to improve Dangote Refinery’s product mix and increase the average revenue generated per barrel.
The bank also anticipates that improved conversion efficiency will allow the facility to process lower-cost, heavier crude oil grades while producing a greater proportion of premium fuels. The combination could reduce unit production costs while increasing revenue, supporting an expansion in gross refining margins.
These improvements are expected to have a direct impact on profitability by strengthening the difference between the revenue earned from refined products and the cost of the crude oil and other inputs used in production.
SIB said the anticipated margin expansion is expected to extend across its forecast period, suggesting that the benefits could be structural rather than limited to a single reporting quarter.
The valuation update also highlights the implications for cash flow. Higher revenue per barrel, combined with tighter control of production costs, is expected to improve near-term cash generation and strengthen the refinery’s free cash flow trajectory.
Free cash flow is a key measure for investors because it indicates the cash a business generates after meeting its operating expenses and capital investment requirements. Stronger free cash flow can improve a company’s financial flexibility and support its long-term value.
SIB’s revised assessment builds on the refinery’s progress towards operating at its full nameplate capacity. The bank noted in its earlier research that Dangote Refinery had achieved full nameplate capacity in February 2026, making its annualised first-half performance a more representative indicator of its underlying earnings potential.
However, that baseline did not fully incorporate the potential benefits of higher-value product optimisation or a deeper expansion into petrochemicals.
The latest review suggests that improved operating efficiency is now providing a stronger basis for incorporating these opportunities into the refinery’s valuation.
The upgrade from Hold to Buy reflects the bank’s increased confidence in the company’s ability to translate operational improvements into higher margins and stronger cash flows. The revised fair value estimate of $0.63 represents a substantial increase from the previous target of $0.45.
The projected upside of 59.4 per cent is based on SIB’s valuation relative to the offer price and represents an analyst estimate rather than a guaranteed investment return.
The bank’s outlook remains dependent on the refinery sustaining the operational efficiencies reflected in its updated forecasts. Its report cautions that valuations and projections are subject to change and that investors may lose part or all of their invested capital.
Dangote Petroleum Refinery & Petrochemicals is part of the wider Dangote industrial group and represents a major investment in refining and petrochemical production. Its ability to consistently deliver higher-value refined products and manage input costs remains central to its earnings outlook.
