How I Finally Started Actually Giving a Damn About Watching Sports

So I used to torture myself through entire football matches. Ninety minutes I’d never get back, just staring at a screen while my mind wandered to grocery lists and work emails and whether I’d remembered to pay the water bill.

And yeah, I felt like absolute garbage about it. Because what kind of Kenyan doesn’t love football, right? Everyone around me was screaming at their TVs and I was sitting there checking my phone for the 23rd time wondering when halftime would finally arrive.

About 8 months back though, everything shifted. I stumbled into live betting during a Gor Mahia match, mostly out of boredom, and suddenly my brain woke up during games.

My Eyes Started Working Differently

When you’ve got Sh100 riding on whether there’ll be a corner in the next 12 minutes, you notice stuff. That throw-in at minute 67 becomes fascinating. The goalkeeper’s positioning on free kicks. How tired the midfielders look.

I started actually understanding what I was watching. My brother nearly fell off his chair when I called a substitution before the manager made it. You pick up on momentum. When a team that’s been sitting back suddenly pushes their wingers high. When the visiting side starts wasting time with half an hour still left.

Numbers Stopped Being Scary

I’ve never been good with odds and statistics. But watching odds move in real time during a match, you connect things. Striker limps off? The numbers change instantly. Keeper makes 4 massive saves in 11 minutes? You literally watch the odds respond.

I burned through Sh340 over three weekends just experimenting. Got back maybe Sh290. Down Sh50 total, but I learned more about football in those weeks than I had in the previous 6 years of casual watching.

What actually helped me:

I kept bets tiny at first. Sh50 here, Sh80 there. I picked the Premier League since I already knew the teams and didn’t try following five different competitions. I’d watch for at least 15 minutes before deciding anything. And the second I felt that urge to chase a loss, I stopped immediately.

The Part That Surprised Me Most

My wife watches now. With me. Voluntarily.

She’s never cared about sports. But when I explained I was trying to read the game and predict what would happen next based on how teams were positioned, something clicked for her. Now our Saturday afternoons look completely different, and she’s calling out defensive mistakes before I notice them.

We’re not dumping serious money into this. Sh100 one week, Sh150 another. But we’re present. Actually talking instead of me grunting one-word responses while she doom-scrolls through Instagram stories.

And I’ve gotten close again with 3 friends I’d basically ghosted. We’ve got this group chat where we drop observations during matches. Not predictions really. More like “that tackle was insane” or “their fullback has been destroyed 6 times in 20 minutes.”

My cousin thinks I’ve lost it. Maybe I have. But I watched 23 complete matches last month without my attention drifting even once, and before this year I couldn’t remember the last time I’d made it through 8 full games. Something changed. Sports feel worth it now.
