Inside TSC’s Latest Promotions, Teachers Now Landing Sub County Director Posts

BY Getrude Mathayo · October 17, 2026 10:10 am

Ask most Kenyan teachers how to reach senior leadership at the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), and you’ll hear the same thing: you have to climb slowly, rung by rung. The reality is more flexible than that.

A classroom teacher can, and sometimes does, step straight into the office of a Sub County Director. Take a secondary school teacher in job group C5 (T-Scale 10).

They can apply for a Sub County Director post, which sits one level up at D1 (T-Scale 11). If they succeed, they are deployed directly into the role.

The Commission’s most recent changes show this isn’t just theory. In late September, TSC transferred and redeployed several county and sub-county directors. Some were moved to new stations. Some classroom teachers were promoted to sub-county director.

And some sub-county directors moved up to county director and deputy county director posts. For any teacher with leadership ambitions, that exercise carries a clear message. Entry from the classroom is real.

Teachers were appointed straight into sub-county director posts, so the route doesn’t depend on years as an education officer or a long string of administrative appointments.

This guide covers who qualifies, what the job involves, what the Commission looks for, and how to put together an application that gets noticed.

Who can apply?

It starts with your job group. Teachers in C5 (T-Scale 10) are eligible, and the cadres in this group include:

  1. Senior Master III
  2. Senior Lecturer III
  3. Head Teacher
  4. Deputy Head Teacher I
  5. Curriculum Support Officer II

That means a Senior Master III who has never been a deputy or head teacher can still apply. You don’t need a school administrative post first. What counts is that you meet the stated qualifications and can show you are able to lead.
