Korean Ambassador’s Cup Taekwondo Championship Returns to Kenya After Eight-Year Break

The championship, held on October 24 and 25, was organised by the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in partnership with the Kenya Taekwondo Federation. It was the first Kenyan edition of the tournament since 2018.

Held during Korea Week under the theme “One Spirit, One Sport, One Future”, the event provided young athletes with an opportunity to compete against regional opponents, showcase their skills and gain experience beyond their usual training environments.

Kang Hyung-shik, the Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Kenya, said the martial art offered an avenue for strengthening relations between communities and countries through shared values.

“Taekwondo brings communities together through the shared values of discipline, respect and perseverance. Beyond competition, it serves as a powerful bridge of friendship, mutual understanding and cooperation between Korea, Kenya and the wider African region,” he said.

The return of the championship builds on other sporting exchanges supported by the Korean Embassy, including activities surrounding the World Taekwondo Under-21 Championships hosted in Kenya in December 2025. These initiatives have sought to expand interest in the sport while creating more opportunities for athletes to develop their competitive abilities.

Kenya Taekwondo Federation President Sulaiman Sumba said the tournament offered an important platform for athletes to demonstrate their potential and pursue excellence. The championship had 264 medals and 12 trophies designated for outstanding performances.

“The Korean Ambassador’s Cup provides a valuable platform for young athletes to showcase their talent, gain competitive experience and pursue excellence,” Sumba said, adding that the awards recognised the discipline, dedication and growing potential of taekwondo in Kenya.

The competition came amid increased activity in the local sport. Earlier in October, the Kenya Defence Forces’ Ulinzi team won 18 medals at the Mazingira Cup, a separate domestic tournament held in Kisumu, highlighting the competitive environment supporting the sport’s development.

Sports Kenya Director General Peter Kilimo said international competitions hosted at facilities such as Kasarani gave local athletes valuable exposure and opportunities to improve their skills.

He noted that such events also demonstrated the importance of quality sporting infrastructure and strategic partnerships in advancing sports development in the country.

Beyond the competition, organisers incorporated cultural activities intended to introduce Kenyan audiences to different aspects of Korean entertainment and popular culture.

The closing programme featured K-Tigers, a Korean demonstration team known for combining martial arts, acrobatics and synchronised choreography with K-pop music. Kenya’s Safari Cats were also scheduled to perform, adding a local element to the cultural programme.

Organisers also planned a lucky draw featuring Korean food products and snacks, targeting visitors whose interest in Korean culture may have developed through music, television and cuisine.

The event followed Nairobi’s K-Lifestyle Showcase earlier in October, which introduced Kenyan audiences to Korean products and experiences. Together, the programmes reflect efforts to build cultural connections between Kenya and South Korea through activities extending beyond traditional diplomatic engagements.

For Kenyan taekwondo athletes and clubs, the longer-term significance of the championship will depend on whether its return translates into more regular competitions, stronger coaching links and additional opportunities to test their abilities against regional opponents.

After an eight-year absence, the tournament has reopened a platform for regional competition while reinforcing the role of sport in fostering cultural exchange and cooperation between Kenya and South Korea.
