KRA Bursts A Syndicate With 358 Laptops, iPads And Accessories Worth 13 Million In Kileleshwa

Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has seized 529 assorted electronic items estimated at KSh 13 million following an intelligence-led enforcement operation conducted at a residential apartment in Kileleshwa, Nairobi.
KRA enforcement officers carried out the operation following intelligence the Authority received about suspected customs tax evasion, smuggling of electronic goods, and the use of residential premises for unauthorised commercial storage and retail activities. The intelligence indicated that a foreign national was allegedly operating an illegal business involving the movement and storage of electronic goods without complying with applicable customs and tax requirements.
During the operation, KRA officers recovered 358 laptops, nine iPads and 162 assorted electronic accessories. The laptops comprised 269 Dell, 83 HP and six (6) Lenovo units, while the nine iPads were iPad Mini models. The accessories included 150 Bluetooth devices, six laptop chargers and six laptop batteries.
The seized goods are suspected to have been smuggled into the country without the payment of the requisite taxes and duties. The items have been taken into KRA custody pending further verification, investigations and determination of the applicable customs and tax obligations.
The operation forms part of KRA’s ongoing efforts to disrupt illicit trade, protect government revenue and ensure that businesses operating in the country comply with the law. The Authority continues to deploy intelligence-led enforcement approaches to identify and address networks involved in the concealment, movement and sale of goods suspected to have entered the country outside the established customs processes.
KRA is particularly concerned about the emerging practice where residential premises are allegedly being used as storage facilities for commercial goods. Intelligence gathered indicates that some individuals operating small retail outlets within Nairobi’s city centre may be using residential apartments as warehouses to store goods suspected to have been smuggled into the country. Such practices not only undermine revenue collection but also create an uneven business environment for legitimate traders who meet their tax and customs obligations.
The seizure is part of KRA’s broader mandate to facilitate legitimate trade while enforcing compliance against activities that undermine Kenya’s revenue system and legitimate commerce. Traders and members of the public are encouraged to report suspected cases of smuggling, tax evasion and other forms of illicit trade through the appropriate KRA channels including the iWhistle platform.
Further investigations are ongoing to establish the source of the seized goods, determine the circumstances under which they entered the country and identify any persons or businesses that may be connected to the suspected offences. Appropriate action will be taken based on the findings of the investigations and in accordance with the law.
