Most Registered Vehicle Types In Kenya As NTSA Records 207,259 Registrations

Kenya added 35,334 new vehicles to its roads in June 2026, the same month the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) began issuing electronic logbooks, new figures from the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) show.
Motorcycles dominated, with 22,696 units registered, far ahead of any other category. Station wagons, the estate cars typified by the Toyota Fielder and Subaru Outback, came second at 6,717, while three-wheelers followed with 1,254.
The rest of the list was much smaller: 895 lorries, 707 trailers, 608 pick-ups, 373 saloon cars, 296 vans, 160 minibuses and 148 buses.
The eLogbook is NTSA’s digital version of the motor vehicle registration certificate, introduced as part of its wider push to digitise services. It replaces the paper certificate for specific transactions, namely new vehicle registrations and ownership transfers.
The new system did not translate into a bump in numbers, though. June registrations fell by 965 from May’s 36,299 and sat 2,316 below January’s 37,650.
Looking at the first half of the year, January was the busiest month and February the slowest, with 28,137 vehicles, a gap of 9,513. Registrations rebounded in March to 35,798, dipped to 34,041 in April, climbed again to 36,299 in May, then eased to June’s 35,334.
The figures also come roughly a month after NTSA stretched the registration window for imported vehicles from seven days to 60 days after arrival in the country. The original seven-day rule ended up in court, where the High Court found it unfair.
The longer window is meant to address the concerns that were raised, giving importers more time to complete registration.
