Mwitemania Beans Prices Rise Above KSh10,000 As Market Prices Vary Across Kenya

BY Getrude Mathayo · October 8, 2026 04:10 pm

A 90kg bag of Mwitemania beans has gone past the KSh10,000 mark, as 1kg is selling at KSh111; retail is a different story, and prices on the shelf vary quite a bit from one town to the next.

The spread between markets

MarketCountyPrice per kg
KibuyeKisumuKSh200
KawangwareNairobiKSh125
Taveta Retail MarketTaita-TavetaKSh120
KangetaMeruKSh100

Kisumu’s Kibuye Market was the most expensive of the lot. Shoppers there paid KSh75 more per kilo than those at Nairobi’s Kawangware, a gap that adds up fast for anyone buying in bulk. In Nairobi, 1kg cost about KSh125 and 2kg about KSh250. Kangeta in Meru had the cheapest beans at KSh100.

How Mwitemania stacks up against other beans, per 90kg bag:

VarietyPrice per 90kg
Yellow GreenKSh13,120.80
RosecocoKSh11,811.60
MwitemaniaKSh10,003.50
Canadian WonderKSh9,778.50
Mwezi MojaKSh9,660.30
Red Haricot (Wairimu)KSh9,595.80

Yellow Green was the priciest, while Red Haricot was the cheapest. Supply, demand, transport costs, and how much stock traders are holding all play a part. Markets close to farming areas tend to have cheaper beans, while urban markets carry the extra cost of transport, handling and distribution.

For farmers, the gaps are a reason to compare markets before selling. For households, a bit of price-checking could save money, especially when buying in larger quantities.

With beans a staple and an affordable source of protein for many families, any movement in price will be felt at the kitchen table.
