Students Get relief As HELB Releases Tuition Funds After Weeks Of Delays

The Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) has begun releasing tuition money to universities and colleges, days after students complained loudly about delayed payments.
In a notice issued on Thursday, October 8, HELB said it had cleared several batches and sent the money to the relevant institutions. The batches are 007139, 007145, 007147, 007146 and 007132.
“Good news, students! Batches HELB-007139, 007145, 007147, 007146 and 007132 have been processed and disbursed to institutions,” the board said.
Students are advised to log into their HELB portals or check with their institutions to confirm whether the money has reached them. The funds cover tuition only and go straight to the school, not to the student.
Those still waiting for upkeep money will have to be patient, as HELB says it is still working through that payout.
The announcement follows growing anger online, with some students saying their applications have been stuck at the allocation stage for months. HELB insists the process is under way. In a reply to one worried student, it said: “We are in the process of disbursing the funds and shall communicate once the process is done.”
The delays also caught the attention of the Ministry of Education, which urged universities to go ahead and admit students while it pushes the National Treasury to speed up the release of money.
On the budget side, the Treasury has set aside Ksh58 billion for student loans in the 2026-2027 financial year, up sharply from Ksh41 billion the year before.
