BY Getrude Mathayo · November 3, 2026 02:11 pm

Five people will be interviewed for the top job at the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), and acting CEO Evaleen Mitei is one of them.

In a notice published on Tuesday, November 3, the commission said it received 124 applications after it reopened the recruitment. The post felt vacant when Nancy Macharia left office in June 2025.

Joining Mitei on the list are Farah Abdi Saman from Mandera, Cheptumo Ayabei from Baringo, Robert Odette from Migori, and Lawrence Kaburu, who is currently the Director of Health Revenue in Tharaka-Nithi County.

The interviews will take place on Monday, November 16, 2026, at TSC headquarters in Upper Hill, Nairobi. Ayabei goes first at 9am, then Mitei at 10am, Odette at 11am, Kaburu at noon, and Saman at 1pm.

Each candidate must bring original identification and academic papers, along with clearance certificates from the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA), the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB), a registered Credit Reference Bureau and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).

They must also carry Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) self-declaration forms and any other supporting documents.

Members of the public have until Friday, November 13, to send in credible information on any of the five. It must come as a sworn affidavit, either delivered to TSC headquarters or sent by email.

This is the second attempt at filling the post. A fresh advertisement went out on September 29 after the High Court threw out the earlier process because of procedural flaws.

In its September 17 ruling, the court noted that the first advert gave applicants only 13 days to apply, yet the commission’s own HR guidelines require at least 14. The judges also took issue with TSC for leaving out the proposed salary, and directed that the exercise begin afresh.

Applications for the new round closed on October 30. Applicants needed a degree in education and at least 10 years of relevant experience, five of them in senior management.

The successful candidate will serve a five-year term, renewable once for another five years, and will run the commission’s secretariat and staff while overseeing the implementation of its mandate.

The advert lists a gross monthly salary of Ksh698,600, a mortgage facility of up to Ksh30 million, a monthly airtime allowance of Ksh15,000, and an annual leave allowance of Ksh50,000.
