Monopoly of Power On Trial

Monopoly of power is being put to the test as Tanzanians vote in what seems to be the most competitive and unpredictable elections in the history of one of Africa’s peaceful nations.

Tanzania is among the few African nation that is not plagued by its ethnicity and this just one of those moments that the world is watching to see if the country can stand the test of time.

The top two candidates have all worked with the immediate government, during the party nomination Edward Lowassa was the front-runner but he failed to secure the party’s nomination which was handed to John Magufuli, Leading Lowassa to join the opposition.

Mr. Lowassa was implicated with corruption scandal when he was a prominent member of the governing party but that does not seem as a hindrance to his future career among the voters.

“Am only voting for him because his on the opposition,” said Mohammed Seif, a businessman in the commercial capital, Dar es Salam. From his eyes you see a ray of hope.

He continued,” I want change and I hope choosing a different party will bring just that”.

People here actually want to have a feel of change saying it’s absurd for one party to have ruled since independence, others are even comparing this election with Kenya’s election of 2002 saying they want that change too.

Most are also optimistic that they will have a peaceful election and whatsoever the outcome peace will prevail.

“This is a very beautiful country and we have learned lessons from other African Countries, we won’t allow political goons to push it in to flames”, said Tizo Mufugi, a residence of Arusha

For the last 50 years or so Tanzania has been under the leadership of the governing party. The political history of Tanzania has mostly been shaped by the Founding Father Julius Nyerere whom under his leadership the country embarked on a course of democracy within a one party state, whatever the outcome of the election, history will be written
