Carrefour, whose local franchise is held by Dubai-based conglomerate Majid Al Futtaim, will open its first branch in Kampala, Uganda after successfully entering the Kenyan market back in 2016.

The French retailer is said to be set to take up space previously occupied by Nakumatt supermarket at Oasis Mall in Uganda.

Majid Al Futtaim has already hired up to 150 workers ahead of the launch of the store which is expected to take place before the end of this year, though a tentative date is yet to be given by the retailer.

“Following Carrefour’s success in Kenya, we are proud to introduce our plan for the first ever Carrefour stores in Uganda, which will further cement our position as a leading customer-centric retailer,” Majid Al Futtaim CEO Hani Weiss said in a statement on Tuesday.

The announcement now brings Carrefour a step closer towards realizing its long-term expansion plan for East Africa.

Additionally, Majid Al Futtaim has plans to open the second branch in Uganda in early 2020 at Metroplex Kampala. This will create an additional 150 direct and indirect employment opportunities for local talent.
